Let each forced marching unit roll two successive dice.

On the first die roll, a Regular's forced march succeeds on a roll of 1, 2, or 3, and a Militia's, Artillery's, or Dragoon's forced march succeeds on a roll of 1 or 2, giving the marching unit a move of an extra space.

On the second die roll, the forced march causes the unit to lose a point of strength on a roll of 4, 5, or 6.

There are four possible forced March outcomes:

No Effect (25% chance for Regulars, 33% chance for Militia, Artillery, Dragoons)

Lose one strength point. (25% chance for Regulars, 33% for others)

Move an extra space. (25% chance for Regulars, 17% chance for others)

Move an extra space and lose one strength point (25% chance for Regulars, 17% chance for others).

(In the original rules there are only three forced march outcomes: a) no effect, b) failure and loss of a strength point, c) complete success with no loss. There was no d) outcome, successful forced march with loss of a strength. In reality, d) was a common outcome of forced marches: straggled troops, blown horses, wrecked wagons.)

Hmmm...that's an interesting option. I can't recall anyone ever using forced march in a game...but the option is always there. This rule seems more realistic...thanks.
