I'm trying to find a game with the following characteristics:

- Economic theme
- Modern time, western business style
- Light to medium weight, playable in about an hour or 1.5 hour
- Suitable for two players

Think Monopoly but fun, or Power Grid but suitable for two (and a little lighter).

Most of the games I encounter in my search are very heavy/long, only suitable with more than two (with bidding for example) or in a bland overused 'trading in arabia/india/mediterranean' style.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks for your suggestion InappropiateAndy.
The theme of Lords of Vegas does look good as does the weight / play time, but based on the reviews I'd say it's not a good candidate for a two player game.

Apart from the "Western business style" thing Asante should fit the bill. It's often described as "trading for two done right".

I'm looking into Coal Baron right now. While not exactly western business themed, it does have the same feeling. Also, it's quick and light and suitable for two.

The board in this image might remind you of Ticket to Ride, but this goes beyond that by making economics a central element.

You must first build small routes in order to obtain a cash flow that can support building larger ones.

See:
First Time Perspective: This is NOT like railroad games I know

The end game allows one player to sit back smugly and collect income while other players have five more turns to complete their network.

Just as a point of information, most games that are considered "long" but also "good for two players" are often dramatically shorter at that player count. Especially once players know the game.

For example, Le Havre with 3 players is a 3 hour affair. But with 2 players that know the game, 90 minutes is achievable.

Jet Set looks like a very good candidate.

Stock Pile is not that interesting with two I think.

Quite so. In my enthusiasm for the game and eagerness to post I left out specific mention but clicking the link or the image gives you the proof.

If you have difficulty locating it in retail then go straight to the publisher.

A game is a series of decisions; a good game is a series of interesting decisions

Agree.

Disagree; I have played a 5 player game of this with at least 2 new players that took only 2 and a half hours to complete, including teaching.

Agree.

For the OP's rather specific request, the best options would seem to be:
Jet Set
Briefcase

Other options which may be worth looking into:
The Networks
Sun, Sea & Sand
Brew Crafters
Industrial Waste (unfortunately probably difficult to find)
Kanban: Driver's Edition
