I have searched but been unable to find an answer to this question. My wife keeps asking me why the game is called Gloomhaven and why would anyone want to live in a place with such a depressing name?

"Hey Hon should we move to Pleasant Grove or Gloomhaven?" "Oh Gloomhaven sounds like such a lovely and happy place." " what a brilliant and beautiful day in Gloomhaven." etc... etc... she just can't stop mocking it.

I just told her its the fantasy world name for Seattle.

Most dungeon crawls and locales aren't pleasant and they sure as heck aint by any groves. They're gloomy and they are havens for bad creatures.

Immediately look to see if you're from Utah. Yes. Yes, you are.

Honestly, some inversion days in Salt Lake feel like Gloomhaven...

Spoiler warning: It makes a lot more sense once you discover...

Spoiler (click to reveal)
That there's a force in the game called "The Gloom". Perhaps Gloomhaven is a haven... from The Gloom?

Sounds like a nice place to me. It's a haven from the gloom.

EDIT: I put spoiler tags. I didn't realize my "joke" was actually spoiling something.

No kidding. At least in Seattle we just have clouds and not inversion smog. I always hate descending from Parley's Canyon, seeing the inversion, and knowing I have to go in there. I'd say it sounds like it's a neighborhood in South Detroit, LOL.

I suspect Founders of Gloomhaven will touch upon this when it is released.

Well that makes more sense. Should have looked up the definition of haven.

Refuge from. Not Refuge for. Oops.modest

I thought it was the place where the boat belonging to the Savvas explorer Barry Gloom once ran a ground.

He and his crew fell a sleep and next morning when they woke up they discovered a load of tents of Vermling had appeared in the surrounding area offering to sell the stricken sailors assorted planks of wood and nails and the services of various Quatryl boat builders and stevedores to help them to refloat their vessel.

Meanwhile an Orchid entrepreneur, with his group of Inox heavies, accosted Gloom claiming to be the "haven master" and charged him port duties as they had beached next to the harbour which had miraculously appeared, made out of wood from the mulberry bushes round on the banks of the bay.

The Vermling forgot to build a wall and a load of humans started to appear from a country to the south, much to the dismay of Fart the Haven Master and 1st councilor of the town.

And yet... why would you need to discover that if it's well known enough to be the basis for naming the city? Surely that would make it common knowledge?

I believe that the whole idea is that your band of mercenaries are new to the area and simply looking for work. Ergo, the local folklore and "common knowledge" don't apply since you theoretically didn't grow up there.

It is a very silly name and she is right to mock it.

If it helps, just mentally replace all references to "Gloomhaven" with "Haven" or similar. I imagine that actual residents would also quickly default to alternatives in the face of such a clumsy name.

Apparently it's trivial for us to shake out the hidden location of a bandit lair, but we never thought to ask anyone about the name of the city?

I get that this is a game of discovery, but I do find it disconcerting when we as players "discover" things that our characters should really know.

I have never bothered to learn why my city is called "Tustin". Nor do I care.

I know what Faversham means, and I cared enough to check whether the apocryphal meaning I had heard was correct (turns out it was wrong, and the real meaning is less interesting). I think if I lived in a place called Gloomhaven, I'd be far more motivated to do a bit of research.

Proof positive that nobody cares.

Cue scene: Mercenary walks through the city gates...
Guard: "Welcome to Gloomhaven, stay out of trouble"
Mercenary: "Gloomhaven, huh? Weird name, is there a story there?"
Guard: "Move along, tourist!"
Mercenary: "Huh, guess there's no story. I'm off to find some interesting creatures to discover, kill, and take their stuff!"
