Since no allowance is made for hiding the money (e.g., no shields are provided) and since all other points are open information, I would say that yes, your money should be in plain sight. If he's the cut-throat kind of player that would ask you to count every turn, just keep your money piled neatly and make him count it himself.

All transactions are public, hence money is open information and public knowledge. The money is double-sided, too, and not meant to be hidden. There's no screen to hide your money. Everything supports money being public.
