The exact art is not final, but the diagram's topology is complete. Probably it will end up looking like a three-pointed star inside of a six-sided star. (Right now it's a triangle inside a hexagon, the topological equivalent).

The outside hexagon is the Despair Track. The inner triangle is the Desecration Track. At game start, markers are placed in the two "0" boxes.

At the start of each Enemy Phase, the Despair track increments 1 point per player. (Thus, in a four player game, at the start of the first Enemy phase, it will move to 4. Then the second phase it advances four more steps, to 2. Then the third phase it returns to 0, to start the cycle again.)

Each time the Despair marker lands on or passes "0", a number of important things happen:

1) 3 Courage is added to the pool (courage is the game's currency, so this is a good thing. The courage pool works just like the Rift skull pool in OMD - anyone can access it with the team captain's permission.)

2) 1 Despair Die is added to the total. (The game starts with 4.)

3) the Desecration track advances 1 step.

When the Despair marker lands on "0", also some important things happen:

A) the Demon Lord advances one chamber closer to the exit. (At least on the core map - he does different things on different maps.)

B) the Demon Lord then spawns a 4th Circle Demon in his chamber.

C) all the available Gift cards are discarded, and new ones drawn (this is kind of a mixed blessing - usually it's considered a good thing by the players though, since they're generally ripe for more gifts to sort through.)

The Despair track's advancement is the game's entire balancing mechanisms for different numbers of players, and it works like a charm. More players mean the Despair dice accumulate more quickly, but you get more actions done in a turn.

Shouldn't it be the Desecration marker in the second quote?

Yes. except now it is the Lord track instead, because that makes what it does more clear. It advances the Lord, spawns a fourth circle mini-lord, etc.
