I'm a Ranger or Druid whenever it's available. I like me some animal sidekicks!

I like to play 'semi wizards'. That is people with some magic(or devine) powers, but where they are not as much of the main focus as in the Cleric or Wizard. So Shadowdancers, Spellblades, ... but also Monks and Druids. Only one I hate with passion in that category is the Bard. I just cannot relate to that role (and even less so to Rogues).

In pretty much every video game where this is an option, I choose warrior. Much prefer getting to play with huge swords and other weapons, than learning how to cast some spell. Haven't played many board games with a fantasy theme but I would be the same there too.

I'm usually stuck as a mage, my usual group has an aversion to things that make a game a little more complex i.e. spells.

I like druids for the same reason as the poster above; awesome pet.

I can never resist buying all the Lifebound cards in Ascension: Deckbuilding Game as I get to pretend I'm a druid!

"Person with bow and arrows" or, if that's not an option, "person who throws knives." I'm a dirty coward.

I do also like "person who messes with time" if that's available in the game system.

I usually like to pick the sneaky, quirky, types -- Rogue, Monk, Druid, maybe Wizard.

But it doesn't matter because I'm not patient enough to play them properly and end up just running head-first into battle anyway.

The spirit of a bard with the mind of a barbarian...

Wait, are you saying not everyone can do magic? I was getting tired of my never-ending rut of spell casting and card tricks.

I like playing necromancers for the same reason. Having little minions to do delegate the work to is always good!

I've noticed that all the types I like to play have special abilities beyond the physical. I think this is why I find the other--fighter, barbarian, monk--to be boring.

IDK about this, in many games I've played monks had "spiritual" powers.

I always find myself choosing whatever is left over. I tend to to this in many aspects of my life. To be clear, I don't take the scraps but I find that I can easily immerse myself in the role of which ever class I take.

I do this a lot when I play Overwatch as well. I look at the overall team composition and take when is needed to fill out the team. I am assuming that the people who are gung-ho to choose a character know how to use that character which is a HUGE assumption but I find this works best for me.

I don't take scraps per se, I try to optimize the team based on my selection. Sometimes, I will be the gung-ho person and choose first but that is rare for me.

In a weird kind of way, I do this in conversations/parties. I like to do comedy and stand-up but in situations where there is already a "funny person" in a setting, I will often try to fill another role although, I love making people laugh. In my mind, this is optimal for the conversation since there is too many people trying to fill the "funny guy" role and it seems like some weird competition.

There is a great scene in "A Beautiful Mind" (movie) that crystallizes this for me. In the scene, he explains that if everyone goes after the attractive blonde no one gets her attention, but if everyone goes after the brunettes they all get the attention of someone who is attractive but perhaps not as attractive as the blonde. I know this example seems might seem to objectify women as a conquest or a math problem to be optimized but it is not my attention to marginalize women.
I know-I know this is my own weird idiosyncrasy.

To state it more clearly, I will go for my own best interests first but I will secondarily go for the best interests for the group as a whole....or at least try to. Again, this is just how I tend to handle situations and I am not advocating others do the same. To each their own.

Ranger/Rogue first.
Warrior types next in line.
Mages after that, although Druids are my favorite class period if available.
Never, ever, do I play the healing class.
