What works as a less expensive substitute for Lahmian Medium other than distilled water? I found a recommendation for Liquitex Medium but Liquitex is not transparent and so will not work in shades.

As far as I know the Liquitex dries clear. Not sure the type of finish though as it maybe glossy. It's definitely cheaper.

You can also use Vallejo Matt Medium.

Even if it dries clear, the liquitex is milky and not watery. I dont see how that would thin like Lahmian Medium does.

It's not worth trying to save the money. Water pools; the Vallejo matt medium affects the colour. This is definitely one context where it's worth paying GW's horrific prices!
