Panic in the streets

The four fighters of the rebilion Biv Bodhrik (the heavy gunner), Murne Rin (the intel officer) the Jedi Diala Passil and Saska Teft (the gadgeteer) were out for a mission in Bespin to win the favor of the locals (as second mission). It was sounded all quite easy 5 civilians had to be brought to a secure room and all imperial troops had to be looked out within 7 rounds. However, if the local civilians saw the rebels engaging in attacks, they would panic which would help the emperor.

When the rebels entered the scene some Bespin security officers, an imperial officer and a handful of Trandoshan fighters were already waiting for them. While Murne and Biv were engaged with the enemies, Saska and Diala concentrated on the evacuation. In the first 2 rounds, the rebels were doing really well: they didn’t provoke any panic due to clever attacks outside the line of sight of civilians and could push most bystanders into reach of the secure room. Moreover, the emperor had to spread his forces and reinforcements quite thin although Murne was wounded in a combined Trandoshan and security officer attack. To slow the rebels advance, the emperor tried to concentrate the fire of the imperial officer, a heavy stromtrooper and the probe droid on Diala. She took some damage but could dodge to potential lethal strikes in a row and managed to kill one heavy Stormtrooper with her vibro knife. Biv and Murne had decimated the security officers and Trandoshan and Saska was “escorting” the last civilian in order to enable the final step of evacuation. The victory was so near for the rebels and the emperor was really “not amused”…

In a sudden turn of events, Bossk and an elite imperal officer entered the scene in round 3. One attack of the probe droid and two attacks of Bossk (due to the commando ability of the elite imperial officer) took a resting Diala down. However all civilians could be gathered right before the entrance of the secure room.

In round 4 it was clear that the rebels could not succed: Saska (wounded in round 3) was killed by a heavy hit of a heavy Stormtrooper in combination with an all-out attack of a new group of Stormtroopers (her detonating device only reduced the Stormtroopers to one remaining hit point each without killing anyone). Tis was devastating for the morale of the rebels who suddenly noticed their unsolvable dilemma: one hero was not allowed to open and close a door in the same turn. That required three rebels and one perfectly timed turn: one rebel had to start his turn adjacent to the door and open it using his second action to push the civilian. Due to spatial limitations, civilians would block each other in and closed behind the entrance of the secure room. Thus a second rebel had to move in range and push the civilians once more. The third rebel would also have to move to the door and close it. However, to guarantee enough pushes, rebels had to take lots of exhaustion which limited their movement or usage of special abilities drastically. To complicate things even more, the wounded Murne as well as Diala had just three movement points and were bleeding from attacks. Moreover, as soon as the door was opened, imperial troops were pouring in the safe room. Biv who was securing the evacuation with his great firepower was heavily hit by Bossk and had to abandon his position. He escaped into the secure room and had to rest. The others two teammates tried to build a "meat shield" consisting of civilians around Biv. However, Bossk the probe drone and a heavy Stormtrooper could also reach the secure room. Biv was alone, his friends could not help him: the superior offensive of Bossk in combination with the flying ability of the drone ate his last three hit points in an amazing throw of 6 points of damage.

Summarizing, even without Bossk, the rebels would have had a hard time. How is this dilemma solvable? How should they kill every imperial fighter in the safe room without causing massive panic? Murne’s powerful ability to give false commands could not be used once in the total game as the thread level was too low. Due to the urgency of the evacuation, Diala spent exhaustion on pushing civilians so that her superior offensive capability could not be used – she only attacked one enemy in the total game. Her defensive skill proofed yet essential as she rerolled into dodges two times. Biv’s gun had no other surge usage than adding precision and no additional damage ability causing many hits been soaked up by defense rolls. Saska’s gadget ability was handy some times and the explosive device was impressive yet not strong enough to save her. Bossk in combination with an elite imperial officer? Sounds like fun – for the emperor… None of them could even be scratched without sacrificing at least two rebels. This was clear for the rebels when they saw their stats and abilities – the fight was absolutely one-sided with Bossk wounding two rebels. All in all, we have still not a single clue how this mission could be won by the rebels. Or did the rebels do anything wrong? Where was their decisive mistake?

I played this mission as a Rebel recently against an experienced IA but first time IP player. It was a bloodbath. I don't think we even got the door to the safe room open, never mind any civilians inside.

We had Drokatta, Loku, Jyn, and Murne. The IP was playing Black Ops.

We talked about it afterwards and couldn't come up with an obvious way for the rebels to win - perhaps if you designed your hero team around winning this mission, you may be able to do it.

It is a tough mission. I'm not quite sure what a good strategy is, but I'm pretty sure having Biv, Saska and Murne isn't doing that team any favors. It's a hard mission with a team of the best heroes; with 3 of the weaker ones it would be even harder.

Murne can usually hold her ground. Some rank her among the best Rebel heroes. Biv and Saska on the other hand...

Most side missions are hard early in the campaign. But the Bossk/officer reinforcement... yeah, that's harsh.

I'm yet to see or hear about a Rebel victory in this mission.
