I'm after some of that "classic" feel; relatively simple rules or straightforward combinations of mechanisms, but not necessarily precluding deeper strategies under the surface; at least some interaction, maybe more than the "that's my spot" variety; something that creates a bit of joviality around a table with fun moments, maybe resulting from a bit of push your luck or revealed master strokes.

Thing is a lot of the "classics" don't scale well down to two, which I'd like to be an option - so, 2-5 (2-4 is probably okay too).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Games that I've played off the top of my head that are the kind of thing in one way or another

Survive!
Downfall of Pompeii
Carcassone
Tikal
Thebes
Samurai
Zooloretto

I've not played the two player version of Puerto Rico, but many people enjoy it and it's great at all other player counts. Alternatively the card version, San Juan, is designed for 2-4.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I have a fairly lengthy list already - just seeing if there's some I should look at that I've missed - and there's a few in there already! Livingstone and Masons and Monte Cristo in particular are ones that will require further investigation - I've not seen them before; not too many moving parts, but a bit of strategy it looks like, cheers!
