I wanted to try some games to get a feel for them. Can I count an app as a gamed played?

I know I can.... do you think that's not in the spirit of gameplay?

I don't see why not. My group and I get a lot more play out of the Coup app than we play the actual game. I played the snot out of Elder Sign: Omens before I finally bought the actual game. That made playing the physical version a lot easier the first time since I had a good understanding of the rules. Cthulhu Realms app is pretty loyal to the real game. Don't even get me started on Tabletop Simulator.

There's so many people that don't have in-person gaming groups that they have to depend on playing online through digital games. Should they not be allowed to claim they played the same game?

Absolutely! While I prefer the tactile feel and face to face components in my games : there is nothing wrong with counting a game on any format.

I believe a very similar thread popped up no longer that 48 hours ago.

The answer is: do whatever you like because the information only matters to you.
