Both. Because they're both good.

I agree. But if you only had to pick one which one would it be and why?

Vinhos Deluxe. Because TTA is really best played online anyway. Although playing face-to-face helps to learn how things work, since you have to physically move stuff around.

"Both" was my first reaction too because they are very different games - one does not replace the other. But if you can only have one then:

Choose Vinhos if:
- You don't like very long games
- You like other titles by Lacerda (Kanban, Gallerist, CO2)
- You don't mind a big number of tiny, seemingly arbitrary rules
- You like Dungeon Petz
- You want to feel at least somewhat adequate during your first play
- You prefer player interaction to be not very mean (blocking a spot, rather than attacking)
- You like wine
- You prefer focusing your strategy on one particular thing (think Puerto Rico)

Choose Through the Ages if:
- You don't mind very long games
- You like other tableau building card games (7 Wonders, Nations, Elysium)
- You don't mind a very big number of different parametres to keep track of
- You don't mind being absolutely hopeless during your first play(s)
- You prefer very direct player interaction (attacks)
- You like history
- You prefer having to constantly balance your strategy (think Agricola)

Damn now the decision is twice as hard. Both your summaries are equally juicy. I feel for the OP.

Well ok!

The real dilemma is whether my girlfriend would enjoy TTA. We both enjoy long heavy strategic games, mage knight being one of our favorite games. But is TTA too much? I like Vlaada games but I never played Dungeon Petz. We already have Agricola and Alchemists for worker placement games. I like the worker placement mechanic but it's not our favorite mechanic. Card draft & tableu building might have to be our favorite mechanic. Maybe we should just hold off on getting a new game and not just get one for the sake of getting one. I'm just all kinds of confused now. I want them all!
