This great game tends to be quite swingy with either early losses or easy wins. This variant tries to reduce the early losses due to certain killer starting villain combos in game 6-7 as described here:
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1641773/what-auto-concede-v...

In game 6-7 there are 14 villians. The chance of any one of these being a starting villian are 3/14 = 21%.
Six of these are from game 4-7:
Game 4: Death Eater, Barty
Game 5: Death Eater, Dolores
Game 6: Fenrir, Bellatrix

For initial set up we make two decks. One of the Death Eaters is shuffled in with the eight Game 1-3 villains. Two starting villains are dealt from this deck. The remaining five Game 4-6 villians are shuffled as a separate deck and 1 of these villians is dealt as a starting villain. Both villain decks are then shuffled together making one villain deck and play continues as normal.

This variant still gives a 1/5 = 20% chance that each of these harder villians will be starting villians, closely replicating the chance in the normal game. It eliminates the sort of deadly starting combos of these villians that can be nearly unplayable.

We found it works well in eliminating the impossible starting villain combo. I mainly play with my kids and they were demoralised by a starting lineup of Fenrir, Bellatrix and Dementor where we lost the first location before we had all had a turn and went on to lose very quickly after that.

We play with three players and find the first location is now often quite close as there is always one difficult villian but never two.

We also play with this variant to prevent easy wins:
