Dear all,

Apologies if this is posted in a wrong thread. Anyway... in april we do a two week roadtrip in california (and a detour in Nevada to make up for the things we can't do in CA due to the weather issues).

As a European, I would like to bring a game back from the states as some of them are a lot cheaper on amazon.com then any of the own options.

Obviously .. not having a fixed address makes amazon.com a non-option.. so I was wondering where would I stop to get my thing... (probably something of fantasy flight or CMON)

We fly in and out of LAX if that would help and generally do LAX-SFO-muir woods-highway 1 till broken bridge-Yosemite-Sequoia nat park-Death Valley-Vegas-Grand Canyon- uuuunknnooown - LAX

I welcome all recommendations

The store in the SF area that I'd recommend is http://gamekastle.com. They stock boardgames, board wargames, and miniatures of various types. They have multiple locations.

Game Empire in Pasadena (30 miles northeast of LAX) has new and used board games. http://gameempirepasadena.com/

Meepleville Cafe in Las Vegas is a board game cafe that also sells games. https://www.meepleville.com/retail

If you really want to save money, and plan to spend at least $100, you would be best off ordering from an online game store, and having the games delivered...somewhere. If you have a hotel reserved near the end of the trip, you could have the box delivered there.

Or if you made contact with a BGGer along your route, they could receive the games for you and hand them to you as you pass through. (If you'll pass through Morro Bay, geekmail me.)

As far as which online store, I generally bounce between Cool Stuff and Miniature Market. But sometimes I end up with Cardhaus, FunAgain, or TimeWellSpent, usually because it's a hard-to-find item.

If saving money isn't your top priority, then it seems like finding a store in LA would be best. I have no advice for you there.

If your in San Francisco check out Gamescape on Divisidero Street. They have open boardgame night on Mondays and you can play any game from thier library. Super friendly staff.

Over in Berkeley check out Victory Point Cafe. It's a board game cafe where you can try out games from thier library and have a waiter show you how to play it. Super fun and they sell games.

Also there are lots of clubs and meet ups in the Bay Area, drop by one if you have time. Meetup.com is a good place to find them.

Enjoy your trip!

While on your way up the coast from LA To San Fran, checkout my local game group. We are meet a few times a week about halfway between LA and Santa Barbara.

Ventura County Strategy Boardgamers on meetup. Ventura County Boardgamers on Facebook. Website.

I too recommend Game Empire in Pasadena. If you are hankering for a Belgium beer there is a Lucky Baldwins over the road from Game Empire.

@oi_you_nutter: waw.. they have Bavik Pils... in the States..I'm impressed. On the other hand they have the Dutch Heineken.. so they still have a lot to learn! Anyway.. I would probably sooner try the local brews.

That's probably wise. I was hoping you had actually checked distances, and weren't assuming that California+Nevada was about the same size as Belgium.

In california, there is a thing called Amazon Locker where you order something and leave it at an Amazon Locker location and you can just pick it up.

Hey when driving from SF to Yosemite, there is a little store that is about 20 minutes out the way in Stockton, CA called Valhalla Hobbies and Games. Look them on Facebook. Great miniatures both historical and warhammer and a collection of about 300-500 board games ranging from classics to the new hotness. Tell Jerry the owner Josh sent you.

In Berkeley, there is also Games of Berkeley which is one of my favorites, https://www.gamesofberkeley.com/ I haven't seen the new store but they said it would be even bigger than the old one. They are a block south of the University of California, Berkeley campus.

In Oakland, the city south of Berkeley, is Endgame. This store is located in the downtown. http://www.endgameoakland.com/

If you find yourself in Concord, CA, about 30 miles east of San Francisco, there is Black Diamond Games. http://www.blackdiamondgames.com/ It's not as large as the others, but is pretty good for a suburban store.

As for where you could ship online purchases....

+1 for Amazon Locker. It really is convenient and secure but it's only good for things ordered through Amazon.

You might want to look into renting a mailbox at a place like UPS (United Parcel Service). I don't know how much it would cost but it could receive any type of mail--United States Postal Service (USPS) (our government carrier) or Fed Ex and UPS (private carriers). https://www.theupsstore.com/mailboxes/personal-mailboxes

Best of luck and enjoy your trip! In the SF Bay area, it's been t-shirts and shorts weather and many spring plants are blooming; though we are in for some rain next week.

"...Yosemite-Sequoia nat park-..."

As you drive from Yosemite to Sequoia, you might go through Visalia on Highway 99. About 20 miles west of Visalia is Hanford, home of GMT Games' warehouse.

Obviously, not a retail location, so contacting them ahead of time would be wise. http://www.gmtgames.com/t-GMTSupport.aspx.

Just a thought.
