Can anyone with the game, speak to how the game plays with one player vs. many?

This looks great!

Do you mean played solitaire as compared with multi-player? Or do you really mean one player playing against a team?

Shame - I'd be interested in a 1 vs all variant, but I've not tried solitaire, so hopefully someone else can answer.

Solo lacks the trading, but reduces downtime

I haven't played it solo - but hope to try that.

I have played it with 2, 3 and 5. We had a great time at 2 and 3, but 5 was not fun enough to repeat. I'd recommend heeding the votes on BGG for #of players.

The solo, 2-player, and multiplayer games each have a different feel. I find in the solo game careful planning and testing take place before the mission spacecraft are sent out; there is no strong urgency to complete mission quickly until late in the game. In 2-player there is more of a race feel and urgency to complete missions leads to greater risk taking. In multiplayer games cooperation leads to missions being completed at a faster pace and having to react as missions you were aiming for are suddenly being completed by another -- unless you can get a faster spacecraft en route quickly or are willing to send a slower spacecraft hoping your opponent's spacecraft fails.

I all you try to pick and complete a subset of the available missions, but but with increasing player counts your choice needs to be increasingly flexible.

The solo game is awesome. In fact, the designer won some solo game award, and it is listed pretty highly on several solo game lists. But, there is no race to complete missions against others, which is an element I love in multiplayer. Shameless plug: this variant attempts to recreate the multiplayer feel in a solo game: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1743985/solo-variant-ai [warning: has not been playtested, merely based on data from regular multiplayer plays]

Solo play = fighting the board with full control on one's action
2 players = a brutal and relentless race game with no trade
3 players = a trade game with some racing elements
4-5 players = too few mission cards and physical components
