Some days you are just all out of luck. The klingons get all the easy planets and explorision cards. And the federation ends up getting 4 Phenomenon 1 pre warp system and one planet where an explorision card allows the klingons to have a control nod.

we've all been there and this game tends to really make you suffer for it.

Alas there will be enough banding together for the little guy once we can play with 5 people zombie

On another note: i had an incredible Match, with shifting alliances an seemingly unstoppable Klingon menace and an ultimate agreement to end the game as a truce between three powers ravaged after the most epic struggle for dominance i have ever experienced in a Boardgame.

You really need players willing to take a few punches in this game.

Well, you could park some ships on those phenomena (with upgraded shields hopefully) and really take off in technology.

Happens to me all the time playing the Feds. I'm determined to win a game with them, had Ascendancy twice only to lose on the last turn for one reason or another. Do love playing the Feds though.

The Federation would get 5 free culture from this, but yeah, this is still a nasty start. You can also just use the base rule that stacks the planetary discs such that the first encounters are always planets. Using the advanced rule is begging for increased variation. If thats not what you want, don't use that rule. Even if you do use that rule, this situation is a bit extreme.

There's a lot of luck at the start of this game - That’s just how it is. But you can mitigate this a bit if you if you keep the planets stacked. Starting with extra resources (as per the optional rule) also helps you from stalling completely when you don't hit good planets. But it changes the game quite a bit.

Came up with a variant to reduce the luck on the first expanse.

Basically it is like the accelerated start with more resources, a project already started, and an unexplored non-hazzardous system already connected via space lane with a non crisis card on it. That way the first set up is rather straight forward. You can still go else where if you want to take risks but at least there is a safe first option.
