I think this is correct, but just to be sure:

1. Player A has strata and wishes to move his army of five units 2 spaces

2. Space 1 of the move puts Player A's armies in a territory containing two units of Player B. Player B opts to battle. Or, conversely, Player A opts to battle. Either way, both of Player B's two units are destroyed, along with two of Player A's units. Player A now has three units left in his army.

3. Player A may proceed to complete his 2-space move by moving his surviving three units one additional space.

Thank you!

Pure mathematics is the world's best game. It is more absorbing than chess, more of a gamble than poker, and lasts longer than Monopoly. It's free. It can be played anywhere - Archimedes did it in a bathtub

Other way to see it is player A move two units and combat player B, with the four units (2 from player A and 2 from player B) dying. Then player A moves his other three units where ever he wants
