Subject: I have my mother's copy of this game rss

She played it as a child in the 1930s, and I played it as a child in the 1960s. When I wanted to learn chess, she suggested Citadel as a good game to start with, as it was simpler. It had fewer pieces,and the goal was to capture the king, which was easier to understand than checkmate. I've always loved the wooden playing pieces.

Just recently I've come to wonder if the opening setup was inspired by the game Gala:
