While I am not in Jason Chaffetz's district (Mia Love is my rep), it's still nice to see people who are already seeing problems with his partisanship and are starting early to put up a fight to end it. I won't get to vote for Damian Kidd, but I will research him and if I like what I see, I will proselytize to everyone I know in Utah County.

Ouch, someone needs to change the caption at the top of that article - I mean, not to apply hetero-normative standards or anything, but I'm pretty sure Damian Kidd is the guy in the left photo, not the lady on the right.

Need help with comments section of article
A quick scan of the comments section has me floundering.
The locals seem to be using some sort of code or patois.
I don't need a lot of help but if you could just provide the following reference terms I'll be fine.
Which word/s mean:
cuck
Trumpanzee
"liberal moron"
"fuck mother, kill family"
"eat shit and die"
"ISIS dog"
?

Is it just me or does the name "Mia Love" sound like a name for a porn star ?

Good catch, not sure Damian Kidd would be a happy camper here, after seeing that misprint.

Unless all those folks who showed up at his town hall meeting actually get off their butts and vote, Chaffetz will be re-elected handily. That's been the issue with the Democrats since 2012 -- they don't vote as much as Republicans do.

That's the thing, though: with the fervor that is going on, the constant reminders of what the weekly protest is (I think there's a protest on behalf of science coming up soon), do you think it's going to get close to the election and people WON'T show up?

Now I agree with the idea that if it comes to Chaffetz and a Democrat, no amount of movements or activism will keep the Republicans from steamrolling the Democrats here in Utah. But I like the fact that even from within the party, people are expressing their displeasure and doing it early, making a serious run rather than just a late throwing-into-the-ring-of-a-hat as an afterthought. Essentially, it gives me hope that others are seeing what I am seeing and are willing to start fighting for the soul of the GOP.

Voting for a Democrat isn't an option, but now people are seeing that just going along in spite of how tightly we hold our noses is no longer an option either.

It's worth pointing out that Utah's CDs, unfortunately like many other places, are heavily gerrymandered:

So, necessarily, any reform of the political system in general has to start with this issue. That said, I definitely appreciate any candidates/measures to put country ahead of party on the other side of the aisle, even if we might differ 100% of the time otherwise.

Because Chaffetz is actually worse than useless, especially in his current committee position.

Sadly, part of our american heritage. Here's Elbridge Gerry's original 'salamander' district (Essex South, Massachusetts) created in 1812.

Longer than that, probably.

I am hopeful that the current Trump situation is opening the eyes of Democratic minded people, such that they realize that truly stupid shit can happen in your country if you don't show up to vote.

Then you'd best leave out such foot-in-mouth statements as the following that Damian Kidd made in his own opinion column outlining why he was running for Congress:

Damian Kidd wrote:
Another example can be seen in the Senate confirmation process of Ben Carson for secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Could there be a more benign (in a good way) political personality on the planet being confirmed for a more benign position? Certainly, HUD is not a lightning rod for party contention. Here’s a good man promising to uphold anti-discrimination rules in housing and yet the vote was still largely on party lines.

You're right. But today, with computerized records of where voters live and programs that can draw maps, gerrymandering has become much more precise and easy to do.

Since Chaffetz is already in the Dominionist camp, he might as well be.
