I've been working on a companion app for Silent Victory, to speed up game play and provide a richer experience. You can find it here:

http://silentvictory.fastwombat.com/

The original game is required to play, this is just a player aid for the part of the game where you patrol and encounter ships.

What Does it Do?

Basically, given your starting base and year, it will generate the patrol assignment, and as you move through the transit boxes generate encounters, rolling for the ships and other contacts. It doesn't do combat for you - you are on your own.

It's designed to use along side the game, simplifying and speeding up game play while also providing a little more detail to the encounters. It's formatted to work on mobile devices and tablets.

As far as I know, it rolls all the same tables with the same chances as the real game. It rolls 1d6, 2d6, and d100 correctly, so everything should work correctly. Let me know if I have missed something. The "SJ" and "SD" radar boxes should be selected if your radar is functioning normally. If it's not, uncheck it so that encounters can be correctly generated.

Since the computer is doing all the rolling, it also rolls up all the optional rules too, including escort quality, escort names, and weather. It also generates dates and times as you make your way through the patrol.

If you have any feedback, let me know. If you are a developer and want to contribute I'll point you to the source.

Could you make it so that there are separate boxes for the x2?

Great work!

Can't find Weather in the SV rule book. Is this your own idea, or an errata?

Great App, just noticed a glitch.

Try Pearl Harbor, January 1945. Nada

I have not tried all combinations, but weirdly this was my first attempt, so I thought it was broke.

thanks for this, may I ask what language this is programmed in? I have seen people post interesting programs like this (Eclipse combat simulator was another) and it looks like fun.

This is fixed, thanks. Also, you can pick dates past June 1945 either.

Very cool! Curious about a few things:
- If I sink a ship, it should be removed from the draw - I'm guessing that's not handled?
- How are you calculating the transit times/dates? Those seem useful, but I don't recall any rules/system for that
- It looks like you're dynamically generating the 'ship counters' - where did you get the graphics for them?
- It would be awesome to be able to track kills, notes, awards, etc, etc...but I'm sure you also have a real job...
\\

Anyway, nice job!

Hey Duane,
Kudos, this thing is pretty cool! of course I was doing it wrong at first until my wife pointed it out. LOL.

I think you should keep expanding it.

Yup, it's fixed, nice one. I like this and it has potential to be a greal App for those that play the game.

Now all you have to do is replicate this for:

The Hunters and The Hunted and you are on to a winner.

It's currently beyond my skill set but can a link to this be added to the tabletop simulator version of Silent Victory. Inspired now to get the USS Cod on patrol...

Sadly I sank the POW ship. When the patrol summary is posted when I return to base, can that one be added to the ships encountered? And since you asked, can I mark which ships were sunk during the patrol? The ending patrol summary is pretty handy.

You did inspire me to take the USS Cod out and it was fun.. Turns out I need to read the rules again (while I can sink the escort ship, I can't sink the escorts... oops..whistle)

Not currently, but its on my list. It's easy enough to remove them from a draw for a single patrol, but that's not very helpful. I could store them in your browser cache, and as long as you always used the same browser that'd work. Of course, then you have to have some way to tell me you are starting a new campaign. Overall I figure it's not a terribly big deal if you get a repeat now and then. I'll likely do something along these lines at some point.

brethekking wrote:

It mentions time in transit is 3-4 days and that the patrol is something like 6-8 weeks, so I just randomly add days during each transit, I add a day during each time you search for an encounter, and I add some random days to the start so you don't always start on the 1st day of the month exactly. The time is randomly generated to yield 50/50 day/night.

brethekking wrote:

I've only got about 4-5 graphics in there, and they are just random pictures I found on the internet. I'm sure that they are not historically correct. The code is written in such a way that we can drop in graphics for each distinct type of ship (or ever ship) if we had them.

If anyone has a source of more accurate graphics, or graphics for the missing types (like passenger, tanker, etc) send them to me.

Yea, this is on my list. I think I'd probably start with letting you tap a target to assign a hit, which would let us track damage and sinkings, and then add a simple "Encounter Notes" field. Those two things would let you generate a full patrol log I think, with tonnage calculations etc.

Hey Greg - thanks! Great game.

Out of curiosity, what were you doing wrong? Something must not be very intuitive.

Let me know if you have any other optional rules you've had in mind but would have involved too much additional rolling or rules to implement with the tables.

I have always thought it would be interesting for someone to design a solitaire game that can use a companion app instead of tables for some things. You can imagine that an app can handle lots more data, lots more decisions, and lots more intricate behaviors than a person can tolerate dealing with on their own. Not a computer game per say, but a hybrid - a board game that uses the app instead of tables or cards to create much more complexity and variety.

This app is very cool/useful. Since the architecture will already be done, any thoughts about applying it to The Hunters: German U-Boats at War, 1939-43?

Perhaps yes, I'll add it to the list....

That's my intention. Without implementing combat features directly (which I don't want to get in to, too complicated), I figure I'd do something like this... You can tap a ship to add damage, each time you tap it adds a mark, and when you get to sunk it's marked sunk. Tap again and it clears the damage (in case you make a mistake). Then I'll add a "notes" field below the contacts. That should give enough information to generate a full patrol log. Sound good? Better ideas?

Not sure I follow, I thought you could sink the escorts, they just aren't usually worth it?

I've had the same thought, but I don't own a copy. My thoughts are if someone sends me a copy I'd be more likely to implement it.

Hi Duane,
The app is fine, I just wasn't pushing the "go to the next travel box" button in my haste. My wife pointed out I was being a dingdong

The escorts are somewhat deliberately dangerous to attack and reasonably small tonnage, to answer that question. But yes, they can be attacked.

Anyway, I am humbled you enjoy the game enough to create such a fun app. Kudos!

Take care,

Greg

I was playing it that if I sink the only escort, the ships are no longer escorted and I can slip away or reload and fire again. For some reason, I feel like that isn't correct and the convoy is still escorted but I do get a -1 modifier.

Not able to provide a rules reference right now, but your second sentence is correct.
