One of the diseases cannot be cured by ordinary actions. Players must collect DNA samples of the disease, which will spawn after epidemics, in order to combine it with the Patient Zero DNA to discover the cure.

After the initial setup, find out which disease has the most cubes on the board. If more than one disease has the same amount of cubes, players choose one. That disease is now Alpha (or whatever you want to call it). Turn its corresponding vial horizontally to represent that its cure cannot be discovered yet. Check the infection cards discard pile to see which city matching the color of Alpha was the first to be infected during the setup. That city holds Patient Zero at a quarantine facility. Place a reminder token there. The cure for Alpha can only be discovered in this city.

In order to discover the cure for Alpha, players must also gather its DNA samples that will spawn after epidemics, representing research done by local teams while studying the different epidemics. To do so, an agent will need one less DNA sample than the number of Epidemic Cards in the game (e.g. in a standard 5-Card game, players will need 4 samples).

While resolving an Epidemic Card, add this step after the Infection Phase: place an Alpha cube on the city that was just infected. It represents one DNA sample. This cube does not cause outbreaks if it spawns in a city with other cubes of the same color and does not count towards the number of disease cubes in a city for the purpose of resolving future outbreaks. It is a DNA sample, not a disease cube. If there are no Alpha cubes available, does not place one. The agents missed one opportunity to get a DNA sample, as the local team was unable to produce it during this epidemic. If this causes the agents to not have enough samples to discover the cure for Alpha, they lose the game.

An agent may collect a DNA sample as an action, placing it on top of the agent card. This action can only be performed in the city where the DNA spawned and if it has no disease cubes, as the local government won’t allow access to the resource unless the agents aid the city with its recent epidemic. Players may share DNA samples as an action if they are in the same city.

If an outbreak occurs in a city with a DNA sample, it is lost in the chaos of the outbreak. Remove the cube from the city and return it to the cubes supply. If this event causes the agents to not have enough DNA samples to discover the cure for Alpha, they lose the game.

When an agent has the required amount of DNA samples on top of his card in addition to regular requirements to discover a cure, he may take a “Discover the Cure” action to cure Alpha at the city holding Patient Zero.

Please, feel free to test and improve upon the idea.
