Hola!

My brother's birthday is coming up and I am trying to figure out what game to get him.

We are somewhat new to board games but here is what I know about him (in regards to board games haha)

- he likes the player interaction of pandemic
- the various routes to victory of Takenoko based on cards he gets
- the strategy of MTG
- he likes a balance between diplomacy, war,trade- different avenues/ways to play
- a game with depth although he read about terra mystica and felt it was heavy

I was thinking of Above and Below, Golden Ages....

Thanks for any help!

Smash Up with a couple of expansions?

Biblios is always a solid choice. So much going on with just a deck of cards.

New Bedford is a great little worker placement.

Sounds your looking for mid-weight games. Here's a quick list of games that are currently in my own collection, that I would recommend....

For strictly 2 players:

7 Wonders Duel
Jaipur
Targi

For 2+ Players:

Star Realms (requires 2 decks if more than 2 players)
Tigris & Euphrates
Tikal
Five Tribes
Eminent Domain
March of the Ants

Above and Below is terrific. I've enjoyed it with 2, 3 and 4 players. People often grab it out of my game bag at meet ups.

If he likes card play and management along with interaction give Evolution a try. I haven't played it with 2.

+1 Evolution

Age?

Maybe one of the Legendary Games? Like MTG, a card game. Like Pandemic, has the co-op interaction but can also be played competitively. And you have to figure out different strategies based on the cards that are available. Also, it can be played solo. Might not be deep enough.

Above and Below is an interresting game for sure,
but looking at the list of preferences I´d say Yunnan is the perfect match.

And yes, the mentioned above Evolution should fit verry well too.

Islebound and Runebound (Third Edition) would be my suggestions! Above and Below looks awesome, can't go wrong with Red Raven Games

Above and Below did not blow me away at all. I don't see much player interaction. I still have it but no one asks to play it. I'm not saying don't get it, but make sure you watch a good video on it.

Tigris and Euphrates was a great suggestion from one of the other users. It is very simple from turn to turn but offers some great depth and definitely player interaction/war mechanism.

I'm struggling to think of something with war and multiple paths to victory. I'm sure someone else will swoop in with a good answer. I don't play a lot of games with attacking.
