In the interest of keeping the GotW ball moving after stalling out I have decided to put forward a brand new Geek of the Week myself.

In keeping with GotW tradition, I have chosen someone I have never met in person and someone from a different country than my own. I also decided to highlight someone who volunteered to be a Replacement Santa in the 2016 BGG Secret Santa.

Using those criteria, I have the honor to present to you all our 597th Geek of the Week!

Hi there! I’m Angel and I’m not at all nervous! I live in Vancouver, BC, with my husband, our cat, and my giant collection of weird cookbooks, and I am a late-bloomer geek. My husband has introduced me to a lot of awesome things over the many years we have known each other, like RPGs and Douglas Adams, but I’ll never forget how he introduced me to board games.

It was Axis & Allies. I’m going to pause here for a moment to let that sink in. Yeah. Axis & Allies. It’s the perfect game for the young 20-something gal who plans parties for a living to fall in love with you over! Resuming story. He spent what I considered an outrageous amount of time setting it up and then told me that he would help me through my first turn in order to explain some concepts. Then he took his turn and proceeded to “teach” me how to aggressively attack by attacking all the locations he had so sweetly advised me to move into. I sat and fumed while took his turn, making it out like he was doing me a favour, and I eventually flipped the board and walked away. Hello board games! I hate you passionately! We were finding pieces in the carpet for years.

Eventually I was introduced to Catan, then Ticket to Ride, and while those games have a special place in my heart, I soon discovered that there was this giant world with boxes full of different mechanics and themes and I could find games that engaged me in more interesting ways.

I have a long distance gaming group that get together to RPG, to play MMOs, and to mock one another while playing board games online. Getting everyone together in person at PAX, BGG.Con, and OrcaCon has been a special treat over the years, especially since some of us had never met face to face before but have been gaming and laughing together for over a decade. Gaming has given me a lot of delight, but the friendships I’ve made over them are priceless (though catch me after I lose and I would be willing to barter at least one for a LotR Collectors Edition copy). We have been talking about designing a game together, sort of a group project goal that we can grin about later on in life while displaying our print-to-order copies on our game shelves. They don’t know this (so no one tell them), but I’ve been fleshing out my own game that involves them as characters. We’ll just keep it between us because you seem like a trustworthy lot.

I’m currently writing my first novel, a work of fiction about a woman navigating the legal system after having survived an assault, and gaming is one of the ways I am able to take some time away from the research and the harsh realities of that. I take a lot of breaks. My WoW characters aren’t going to level themselves.

And here are her 2 truths and a lie:

Poll: 2 Truths and a Lie
Which is the lie?
(You mean to tell me two of these are true!?!)
I trained for and ran an ultra marathon just to settle a bet

I toured with N’Sync
I fell off of a cliff in Australia

Thanks so much for volunteering as a Replacement Santa! For my question, can you reflect on the experience of filling in as a Replacement Santa and how it compares to the normal part of the exchange.

As a replacement Santa, I contacted my Santee via my personal account instead of going through the tricksy fun of the anonymous Santa account. I felt like an important part of being a replacement was making sure that my target knew that I was making myself personally accountable to him after his previous experience. Being able to converse with my target openly and ask him questions as a person and not anonymously makes the experience...more gratifying? More personable? It makes it more real and I get the warm fuzzies knowing that I have made a personal connection with someone.

Don't get me wrong, I dig the anonymous Santa just as much but I love me a good "Nice to meetcha".

It took my group just under a year to complete Pandemic: Season One, playing at various conventions and gatherings together. It was such a great cooperative experience and a good way to bring us all together again at least once a day to touch base.

Season Two expectations? Yikes. It's hard to even imagine what I'd want out of it. We found the first half of the year pretty manageable with no massive issues overall, and then we hit...I think September...and everything exploded. I liked that false sense of security and I really hope that the next season manages to recreate it now that everyone is expecting it. I'm really digging Iberia, so I have to wonder if drilling down from a large world map to a region would be doable in the legacy system.

Whatever comes of it, I'm in. It may take me a year in real life to get it done, but I'm preparing my medic (Trapper John) already.

Congratulations, Angel!

1. After your disastrous introduction to board gaming, would you ever play Axis and Allies again?

2. What food from your homeland would you recommend everyone try?

3. Which do you prefer, Star Wars or Star Trek?

4. What is your favourite cartoon series from your youth?

5. If you could try any board game ever made, which would it be?

6. What is your best board gaming memory?

7. If you had a chance for a “do-over” in any board game situation you've been in, what would you do differently?

8. If you could travel to any board game related setting, where would you go and why?

9. If you could only take five possessions on a quest, what would they be?

10. What would you want your tombstone to say?

11. What are your top three favourite board games and why?

12. What special skill would you’d like to learn and why?

13. How would the rest of your gaming group describe you?

Congratulations on making Geek of the Week!

I have a few questions for you......
1 What is your opinion of war gaming?
2 Do you have a favorite war game; if so, what is it?
3 What are your opinions or memories of playing Risk?
4 What are your opinions or memories of playing Axis & Allies(Other than those already covered...)?
5 What game would you tell all gamers about that just has no publicity and that nobody knows about?
6 What game reminds you most of being a replacement Secret Santa?

I thank you for your time. thumbsup cool

1. Nope! No way. Non. I figure that I can keep the memory, an amusing bit of history from the beginning of my relationship with my husband, and just keep playing other games. Life is too short to fail again at Axis & Allies.

2. Poutine is usually the standard answer and, I'm not going to lie, it's worth the heart attack. But I'd also like to give a shout out to the other wonderful Canadian delights like Nanaimo Bars, and Butter Tarts. Now I'm hungry. You guys try these foods and get back to me. Unless you are diabetic. You should probably not have these foods. I'm so sorry.

3. Trek. FOUR LIGHTS.

4. The Jetsons. I wanted to live in the Jetsons world SO BAD. Well, I actually just wanted a Rosie to give me sass and clean up after me.

5. I would want to play Cones of Dunshire with Adam Scott as Ben Wyatt.

6. At PAX a few years back with my gaming group from all over North America. The last night together we had a big Last Night on Earth game and at the end of it, a friend announced that he had been keeping a tally of all the games we had played over the convention and presented the winner of the most games with a trophy of the back half of a donkey. We turned it into a little presentation ceremony, took photos of the handshakes and cheesy smiles, and I'll never forget it.

7. I would have never ever let him teach me Axis & Allies, that's for certain. Oh! I would have made sure the quarantine specialist didn't die in Pandemic Legacy. That was....a giant blow.

8. I would go to a very specific fortified French town in the Aude department, of which it is the prefecture, in the Region of Occitanie. Then I would lie down in the fields and whenever anyone passed me and asked what I was doing, I would yell "I AM WINNING!". Now you all know my Carcassonne strategy. You are welcome.

9. A towel, a flashlight, a copy of the Orc to English dictionary (this is a very real thing that I own), a spork, and a pair of well-worn hiking boots. This ain't my first rodeo quest. Though to be clear, I'd bring very different things to a rodeo quest.

10. She lived out loud.

11. These are subject to change on a whim. Right now I'm head over heels in love with:
a)The Shadow Over Westminster. It's a relatively quick semi-coop that scratches all the itches I usually have. I also routinely run into the designer and tell him how much I love it.
b) The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game. I love this IP and playing the game, running through the various books, feels like I'm a part of it.
c) Burger Up. Bob's Burgers is one of my favourite shows right now, and we play this game with a house rule that any burger completed must come with a punny name related to its ingredients.

12. The skill of being in crowds and being completely comfortable and at ease. They don't tell you when you are young that you should nurture this ability and then I hit...nevermind how old...and I'm like "this is work and I wonder what is on Netflix". I'd also like to be able to keep a plant alive. The one plant that managed to survive, the only one EVER, was thrown out in a move and I haven't let it go since. It's been around 14 years.

13. I have decided I don't want to know. No one tell me.

1. I think war gaming is great! I haven't played a war game, but I love that it is a thing and it exists. The idea that people want to play out a particular historical moment, to maybe try and see something that could have turned history on its nose while sticking within the parameters of history, is fascinating and delightful to me. HISTORY FOR EVERYBODY!

2. I don't have one, but there is a league in my area that does events where people can drop in and watch or set up their own games. I've been wanting to drop in and just watch people play for a few years now and maybe I'll finally work up the courage to do so!

3. Risk is...tricksy. I don't like to lose, or maybe it is actually more accurate to say that I don't enjoy feeling like I'm being targeted and constantly attacked. So games like Risk don't really appeal to me because eventually only one person can win and I can only give my husband threatening looks to hold him off attacking me for so long. I think I might enjoy it more if Risk and A&A hadn't been my introductions to board games as an adult, and if I had been taught them in a different manner than "we will just play normally and you'll pick it up". Though I don't think there is any method to teach it that differs from that.

4. That's pretty much the sum of my A&A experience. That shag carpeting was a minefield of game pieces for years and I'm not exaggerating even a little bit.

5. The Captain Is Dead. Though AEG is producing a version that is coming out shortly, the base game and the expansions were (maybe still are) available from The Game Crafter. I love this game. The premise is exactly what it sounds like, and it's not an easy jaunt to the finish line! The art is fantastic as well, and that is something I always appreciate. Lovelovelove. I'm actually looking over at one of the boxes right now as it is displayed on a shelf in my living room.

6. Red7. It's a game I had heard about but never played until a random gamer at OrcaCon this year sat down at our table and pulled it out while we were packing up another game, assuring us we would enjoy it. We did. It's a great game for playing with people you don't know, it takes only a few minutes and you can get to know each other in small pieces between moves, and then you smile and shake hands and wave goodbye. I bought a copy for my replacement Santee (along with things he had actually listed) as a nod to that random stranger who made my day by introducing me to a game he loved.

G'day Angel,

I would ask you which cliff in Australia it was, but that may reveal too much information whistle

I try to remember to ask each Geek of the Week these gaming related questions, so to start with here's the ever so slightly modified GeekSpeak Hook questions for you:
Favourite game(s) for d10-1 player (optional, many non-wargamers wouldn't have an answer for this)
Favourite game(s) for d10-2 players
Favourite game(s) for d10-3 players
Favourite game(s) for d10-4 players
Favourite game(s) for d10-5 players
Favourite game(s) for d10-6 players
Favourite game(s) for d10-7 or more players (and you may choose a Party Game here although I wouldn't meeple )

Also Word Association Football , I will list a word and you list a game or games that you associate with it. If you like you can expand and tell us if you like it/them or hate it/them and possibly why.

Space ships
Witches
Trains
Transport (may include trains)
Workers (paid or otherwise)
Trading
Building
Pink
Theme
Ships
Money
Purple
Government
Vampires
Infrastructure
Dice
Dinosaurs
Gemstones
Dragons
Beer
Wands

Is there any particular game that you have played recently, new or old, that you would like to recommend to readers of this thread? And optionally, why?

Last but not least, what are the five games that you have played most recently?

We absolutely play board games long distance! We have used a variety of formats over the years to juggle our various game play. When there is an option, we will all buy the game and play together online using the online multiplayer function, like with Ticket To Ride. For a while we all used Pogo and that was fun. VASSAL is another outlet we have used quite a bit for some games. Our latest love is Tabletopia through Steam, though with older machines it can be a bit clunky.

We typically run a voice-only Skype session while playing to smack-talk

I'll never tell! Though I suppose at the end of the week I'll do just that, provided I wasn't lying...

Okay, let's tackle your list! These will be for games I have specifically played with this number of people and, most importantly, have had a blast doing so.

1P: The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game
2P: High Treason: The Trial of Louis Riel
3P: New Bedford
4P: Firefly: The Game
5P: FUSE
6P: Mysterium
7P: Nanuk

Space ships - Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game
Witches - The Witches: A Discworld Game
Trains - Ticket to Ride
Transport (may include trains) - Neuroshima: Convoy
Workers (paid or otherwise) - Epic Resort
Trading - Dale of Merchants
Building - Suburbia
Pink - Sentinels of the Multiverse: Unity Hero Character
Theme - Tales of the Arabian Nights
Ships - Cornish Smuggler
Money - Firefly: The Game
Purple - Adventure Time Card Wars: Princess Bubblegum vs. Lumpy Space Princess
Government - Statecraft: The Political Card Game
Vampires - Transylvania: Curses & Traitors
Infrastructure - BUS
Dice - Monsters & Maidens
Dinosaurs - Dinosaur Island (I'm so excited for this one)
Gemstones - Ascension: Deckbuilding Game
Dragons - Blue Moon Legends
Beer - The Red Dragon Inn
Wands - Wizard School

Recommended game: Bad Medicine
I have not once played a game of Bad Medicine that hasn't resulted in belly laughs. It's witty and really brings out the ham in each player. The more, the merrier, but I've played it with as few as three people and had an absolute blast.

Five most recent games:
The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game, Dark Gothic: Colonial Horror, Castle Panic, Burger Up, Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game. The last is a game recommended to me in a thread I posted over the holidays and it has turned out to be one I frequently pull out. It's one I would have never come across on my own and I'm so grateful for someone taking the time to point me to it.

I started as Alliance and played them through Burning Crusade, then faction changed all my characters to Horde and haven't looked back!

My main is a goblin warrior at max level (110 now). I have a warlock (my secondary), a mage, a death knight, and a demon hunter all between 100 and 110. I've been playing since the game launched, so my main started out as a dwarven warrior before I faction changed and then later race changed.

I am a casual WoWer now, which they have made very easy to be. Gone are the days of hardcore endgame raiding for new content and now I can pop in, play for half an hour, and then log out and be productive again. I appreciate a game that understands that its base is aging and has different gaming parameters.
