***DISCLAIMER*** This BGG forum post was composed as a course requirement for an honors seminar at Central College (Board in Class: An Academic Survey of Modern Board Games, SP17). Constructive feedback and conversation from all BGG users is welcomed and encouraged!

One of the things that can make a game truly unique, are the game pieces that each game has. Some pieces will even become as iconic as the game itself, like the pieces of monopoly such as the terrier and the racecar. These pieces not only give a game a unique look, but they allow for unique game-play from game to game, even if they have the same mechanic. When you look at the games within a specific game mechanic, like area control, you can see that games with different pieces will play completely different, even though they have the same game mechanic. Two games that fall under the area control game mechanic are Small World and Cyclades. These two games are completely different to play and this is partially due to the pieces that the games use.

The game of Small World is primarily dependent on tokens for its game play. The game requires you to conquer the board with the limited number of tokens that you get from your race and special power combo. These tokens help determine the amount of regions on the board that you can conquer and the way that you defend the area that you have conquered. Simply put, the tokens allow a player to use them both offensively and defensively. Without the ability to use tokens, the game would not be able to be played. There are also other tokens, most of which are given to the player through a special power, that the player can use defensively to help make certain regions harder to conquer or outright impossible. These tokens help change the strategy that a player will use when conquering and defending. Another piece that is heavily prevalent in Small World is the use of the reinforcement dice. This dice is unique to the game because it is a six sided dice that is used at the end of every turn to give the player an extra chance to conquer a region on the board. The reason this dice is special is because three of this dice's sides is blank with the other three being numbered one, two, and three respectively. This dice allows for the player to use the number that is rolled to add to their remaining tokens to help them possibly conquer the space that they chose (except when the player has the special power of Berserk). The final game piece that is crucial to Small World are the Victory Tokens. These pieces are essentially the currency of the game and even determine the person who win the game. The only real in game value for this currency is for purchasing new races and special powers and for determining the game’s winner. While this concept for this particular game piece is not unique to Small World, it is an essential part of the game. These game pieces allow for Small World to be a game that is unique within the area control mechanism.

Cyclades has a different style of play, and this is in part due to its game pieces. Cyclades, much like Small World, has a currency. This currency is used to bid on certain tasks that the player can do during a turn. In this sense, the currency for Cyclades is far more useful in game than in Small World, but is completely useless to the player once the game is over. So unlike Small World, the player is encouraged to be more aggressive with their money when it comes to bidding. Another game piece that Cyclades uses are figures. These figures are used in a similar way that Small World uses tokens. The player will get these figures when they purchase them after bidding and use them to help them conquer area on the board. However, unlike Small World’s tokens, a player will need the different figures in order to win the game. This will allow the player to travel over water, battle with other players on land, and take over universities and temples that other players controlled. These figures are key to a player when they are trying to conquer and control area.

Both of these games use their game pieces to differentiate themselves from other games that use the same mechanic. Some pieces, like currencies, are found across different games. However, like Small World and Cyclades, games will use these game pieces in a different way to add to the game-play. Even though some of these games will have similarities, thankfully, they all have different pieces that make each game distinct and fun to play.

Match singular noun and verbs: ONE of the things... IS the game pieces. Things is not the subject, as it's part of a prepositional phrase. There also should be no comma. Monopoly is a proper noun and must be capitalized. Remember to double-check grammar, which is as important as composition to formal writing.

General concepts are sound. I do not agree with your overall thesis or examples (a personal preference) but they are well stated. You won't lose any points on content.

You need to clean up your text and grammar. Take this and read it to yourself out loud...hopefully you will hear where the issues lie. If not, you need an editor.

Pete (isn't trying to discourage you)
