2017 FINAL ORPHAN'S LIST UPDATE: The membership is to be congratulated for again stepping up to the plate, albeit at the 11th hour, to man nearly all of the eligible events for WBC 2017. Only two qualifiers had to be replaced for lack of a GM commitment. See http://boardgamers.org/wbc17/orphans.html for the last update of eligible events for 2017. The times listed are the initial requests and just a rough estimate at this time and should not be considered final until the actual schedule is announced in May. All GMs who did not specify a specific time for their scheduled demonstrations are urged to contact CD@boardgamers.org for a specific request as soon as possible.
Although we are now accepting only sponsored tournaments in the time remaining, we will continue to schedule seminars, demonstrations and meetings until the scheduling process is complete in May so anyone interested in providing same should contact CD@boardgamers.org for details.
Opening weekend reservations have been strong. So much so, that our meeting space allotment for that weekend has been increased over 2016 levels … thus promising an enhanced gaming environment for early arrivals.
UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT: The end of March marks the changing of the Guard at WBC as Don Greenwood retires after 26 years as the Avaloncon/WBC Convention Director to be replaced by Ken Gutermuth. As promised, he leaves us with more than a few parting words in his last Tenth Seat column at http://boardgamers.org/about_newsletters_lastview.html. What he lacks in conversational gab he makes up for with a pen that doesn’t know when to quit. For those interested in the trivia behind the evolution of WBC and his views on the matter, sit down for an enlightening read. Others shouldn’t waste their time. The King is dead. Long live the King. Any communications to BPA starting on April 1st should be sent directly to the new Convention Director at ConventionDirector@boardgamers.org. Please make a note of that address.
REGISTRATION RATE INCREASE: Only a week remains to beat the next scheduled price increase for Sustaining and Tribune level memberships for WBC 2017. Rates increase $10 on April 1st for members and $25 and $50 respectively for Exhibitors and Vendors. See http://www.boardgamers.org/forms/MemberForm.shtml to get your best price now for stays of four days or more.
HOTEL RESERVATIONS OPEN: On February 15th at 9 AM EST Seven Springs commenced taking WBC hotel reservations for stays of four days or longer - down from the previous required stay of five days. The length of stay requirement will be further reduced to stays of two nights or more on May 15th. Details are provided at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbclodging_7S.html. Please note that reservations require a non-refundable deposit when making a reservation.
ELECTION: It will be tame compared to Trump vs Clinton but we promise no Russian interference as we once again elect three members to three-year terms on the BPA Board of Directors. This year's slate again features three incumbents and two challengers vying for three seats. Get all the information at http://boardgamers.org/about_election2017.html. As usual, voting is effortless and takes only a moment thanks to the electronic ballot at http://boardgamers.org/forms/BoardBallot.shtml. Voting will remain open until June 15th. All members (any paid attendee of WBC for more than one day as well as all PBeM members) have voting rights and are urged to vote since validation requires sufficient membership participation.
CAREER MEDALS & LAURELS TOTALS: The website renovation continues. The latest new pages to go live are Career Wins at http://boardgamers.org/wbc_medals.shtml and Career Laurels at: http://boardgamers.org/wbc_laurels_sums.shtml.
SOCIAL NETWORKING: Keep up with WBC electronically by joining the World Boardgaming Championships (WBC) Facebook group and the BPA_WBC Twitter Page. You can also easily find us in the Boardgame Geek Forums under Gaming Related, Conventions, WBC.

PRO GOLF TIME: Warm up your dice for the zany Seventh Annual BPA Pro Golf PBeM tournament to commence, appropriately enough, on April 1st. Check out the details at http://www.nktelco.net/bdmonnin/Pro_Golf_PBeM.html and enter via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
MARCH MADNESS ENTERS MARCH: Less than half of the field remains. There are now four teams in the Elite Eight (Mike Pacheco, Don Greenwood, Bob Hamel, and Bruce Monnin). The survivors include both a #1 seed (the best team remaining in the tournament), and a #43 seed (the fourth worst seed remaining). Check out the progress at http://www.nktelco.net/bdmonnin/mm-brack-2017.htm.
KILFARA SWEEPS WAR AT SEA: Darren Kilfara won his third BPA tournament and second War At Sea PBeM title by going unbeaten in the 11th BPA PBeM tournament over a field of 27. Darren kept his unblemished record spotless with an overwhelming British victory in the Final, scoring 10 POC by Turn 5. Also scoring laurels were Ed Menzel, Bob Hamel, Mike Pacheco, Andy Choptiany and Jonathan Lockwood in that order. See the account at http://boardgamers.org/yearbook16/was.html#pbem; with the updated laurels list at http://boardgamers.org/eventhistory/was.html.
KOEHLER TAKES HERE I STAND: It took Stephen Koehler 15 years to follow his third BPA tournament win with his fourth, but he did it in style with a 60-laurels win over five rounds and a field of 68 in an event that started two years ago in April of 2015. Also taking laurels in the Final were Dennis Mishler, Michael Dauer, Zac Willoh, David Kiefte and Brian Kluger in that order. See the account at http://boardgamers.org/yearbook16/his.html#pbem and the updated HIS laurels at http://boardgamers.org/eventhistory/his.html.
PATHS OF GLORY ENTERS SECOND ROUND: No less than 52 matches are underway in Round 2 of the BPA’s largest email tournament as eliminations begin. 24 matches were between folks who racked up a win in Round 1 and 28 matches involved those who lost in Round 1 as well as ten new reinforcements joining the event this round. Tom Drueding, as the most recent former champion, after Nick Anner, is on the sidelines having accepted the bye this round. As usual, GM Tom Gregorio sets the gold standard for PBeM GMs with an entertaining and informative newsletter keeping everyone up to date. If you’re interested in POG, you should get on Tom’s mailing list at email@example.com.
Remember ... all of the above PBeM fun is free to current BPA members. Others may qualify with a $10 Email membership in the year the event starts. All multi-day paid attendees to WBC are current BPA members for the balance of that calendar year. You need not keep your membership current in order to finish a PBeM event. Players may join the BPA throughout the year. See the BPA Terms http://www.boardgamers.org/bpaterms.htm page for details.
BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run tournaments. Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending support to one another so such events can happen. No one cares as much about your hobby as you do. Get involved. See the requirements to host a BPA email tournament at http://www.abovethefields.com/top_pbem/
