I don't really like the idea that if your pilot dies, you can automatically lose a scenario because it becomes unwinnable when nobody can fly the chopper. Thematically speaking, if the only skilled pilot died and they needed to fly the Helicopter to escape, the group wouldn't just sit there and let themselves be eaten - someone would at least have a go at flying it as they'd have nothing to lose.
So here is my idea for a variant where any survivor can fly the helicoptor.
- If they have the pilot skill, they can fly without restriction as normal.
- If they don't have the pilot skill, they can attempt to fly the helicoptor but have to make a luck roll before each action with the result affecting what happens.
For taking off:
1-3: False start. You are unable to work out how to take off, so nothing happens. As you've spent the time trying, your action is still spent.
4-6: You are able to work out how to take off and lift into the air as normal.
1-2: The helicoptor crashes and you distribute 4 wounds amongst all survivors inside (Helicoptor also flips to crashed side and becomes unusable).
3-4: the helicoptor flies/lands but due to your inefficient skill can only move one zone per action.
5-6: the helicoptor flies/lands as normal, flying up to two zones per action.

Cool variant for sure!
