There does seem to be a snowball aspect if you fall behind early.
I wonder about some sort of BP chart for losing Encounters? Players could maybe gain a "Gearloss Token" or something when they lose an Encounter, and may spend them on something like the following chart of bonuses:Cash in 1 Gearloss Token to
: Immediately give one Gearloc in your party a Training Point (not usable in Solo mode).
[Would effectively turn a no-reward loss into something
useful. *IF* the players decided to use a Token thusly, because, staying true to TMB BP logistics, continual use of this item would keep the more expensive items on this list out of their grasp]Use Window
: Probably used early in a campaign to keep moral up, or if someone really needs that one skill to put them in great position for the next encounter.Cash in 3 Gearloss Tokens and 2 Loot cards to
: Skip the next New Day phase of the game.
[Would give the players a free pass on losing that last Encounter: draw a new Encounter and go!]Use Window
: Mid to late game. Useful when you come up against that encounter with a failure condition? Or just to try and get your run back on track.
And so on -- I'm sure the genius at CTG grok the idea, and if it suited them, could pepper some kind of list like that with all kinds of useful stuff to spend Encounter Losses on, or whatever you might call them.
An idea at least! (or a stolen one from another part of your game!
