An entry for the 2017 two-player Print and Play Game Design Contest

Claim the Vikings

Players: 2
Game Time: 15-20 minutes
Ages: 8+

Current phase
Components ready. The cards use minimal ink and are black-and-white printer friendly.

Overview
A great battle was waged by the Vikings, and now the warriors who fell in battle await their fates. You are the Valkyries who choose which warriors will join Odin in Valhalla.

Each Viking bears two weapons and one shield into battle, which are indicated by icons on the edge of the card. You will use these symbols to claim the Vikings. Whoever claims the most Vikings escorts their warriors to Valhalla (i.e., wins the game).

Miscellaneous
Long time gamer, but this is my first completed attempt at designing a game. Any and all feedback is appreciated! As art is not my strong point, I have focused on building a light and fun gameplay experience.

I should point out that I am using a self-imposed constraint of using no more than 54 cards. While the game is obviously not publishable in its current state, I wanted to have a reasonable publishing cost target for the game given its target audience and playtime, as a learning exercise.

Edit: added a paragraph about the design philosopy.

seems simple enough. since you are just using icons you might consider making them bigger on thr cards just to make it easier to see

the main thing to work out i think is a proper probability of all icons to either be balanced or not. are players allowed to see captured vikings in order to count icons and determine which cards to play from hand?

I've debated this back and forth, and thus far I've intentionally left it undefined. However at this point I'd lean towards "no", in the interests of keeping the game light and fast.

Looks like a cool little game.

What about the balancing that Todd mentioned? It looks like the player cards are balanced, but the Viking cards are not? If my count is right, some symbols appear on 15 cards, others appear on 20. Is that intentional, does it serve a purpose?

Oops, missed that the first time through.

All the symbols are balanced - for Vikings, there are 6 possible combinations of the symbols (2 weapons with no repeats, 1 shield), and 5 copies of each combination. For the Valkyrie cards, there is 1 copy of every combination of 2 symbols. I did try a few test plays with unbalanced symbols and it didn't feel right. So I've taken pains to keep the numbers balanced.

I'm not sure it's my kind of game (too mechanical for me so far), but here are a few suggestions after a quick reading of the rules :
- since you're under 54 cards, use one for a quick rule reminder ?
- organize the Valkyries cards differently : put the "self" part on the bottom and rotate the "opponent" part, so that each player faces and sees the information that's relevant to him.
- did you try the ruling where Vikings featuring both symbols would go to the active player ? It would be a nice way of crippling the Viking offer for your opponent, but I don't know how it would affect game balance.
