Hello, everyone. My name is Sam. I have loved board games since I was very young. Sadly, in recent years I haven't gotten to play them much as very few people in my house are as interested as I am. At least that was, until my older brother decided to start playing them with me. We liked to play video games together a lot, so this wasn't too much of a jump back. To me board games are to video games like books are to movies. Video games are awesome, but there's some kind of charm with board games that they can't really replace.

Anyway, I'm happy to be here and will try to follow the rules.

Lately, we've been playing a lot of Chess. Funnily enough we didn't even learn that game for many years because we thought it would be too complex for us, but now it's quickly becoming one of our favorites.

Thanks so much for the kind welcome, everyone. It's nice to know there are still so many people in the world who still enjoy playing board games.

Hi Sam. Some more recommendations for you!

I’ve recently acquired a 2-player game called Kahuna, which is a lot of fun. All about taking turns to both connect and destroy bridges between an archipelago of islands.

But with regards to ‘Abstract’ games you might like, when I played Hive for the first time, I was struck by how it reminded me of Chess (move one piece/insect at a time, the insects all move in different ways, aim of the game is to try to surround/smother the Queen Bee into submission)… And the thing I love about Hive so much is that unlike Chess, it’s portable. No board required. The hexagonal insect tiles themselves ‘become’ the board. Perfect for taking to the pub, coffee shop, park…

If you do like Abstracts on a board though, then maybe Quoridor is one to check out. The aim sounds simple: get your solitary pawn to the other side of the board (a similar tactic to Chess). However, the challenge comes in by you and your opponent building walls (or creating corridors?!) to block/manipulate the possible pathways. Haven’t played it myself (it’s on my large must-play-this-soon list!), but it could be your cup of tea.
