After decades of being in design and marketing, I've given up corporate life.

As of May 10th, I am the full time historic blacksmith at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

The pay isn't as good. But my mortgage gets paid off in a few months and it balances out.

I will spend time teaching 600-800 school kids daily about blacksmithing in 1875.

It's a radical lifestyle change, but what the hell. If not now, when?

That's pretty awesome. Best of luck to you, especially when it comes to dealing with 600-800 school kids every day - hopefully that isn't all at once.

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

For the last time, kids! You nail the shoe to the horse's foot, not its backside! Now do it right and maybe next time you won't get kicked across the shop.

Normally, knives. But they don't want weapons crafted. So hooks, keyfobs, hinges, trivets, candleholders, bottle openers, bbq forks, whatever anyone seems to think is cool.

I'm sure one could argue that at least half of those could be used as weapons by someone.

Are the things you make put up for sale in a gift shop, given to the students as souvenirs, etc? Seems like it would be kind of a fun gig!

Yep, absolutely. The gift shop, with a bit coming back to me.

I have to figure some standard things I can knock off fast that sell well.

Fireplace pokers are very easy to make, look neat, and usually sell for a nice amount.

I think ring puzzles would be way cool.

And are vaguely weapon-like, without being an actual blade!

I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am.

One of the popular items that the smiths craft (or used to craft) at Silver Dollar City was turning an old railroad spike into a ladle. The head of the spike was heated and hammered into the bowl of the ladle, and the shank was stretched into the handle. Could be more work than you want to do in a day.
