Reports suggest 50 MiG-25PD with the tactical VVS forces and 405 with strategic defence PVO. This suggests that the 787 IAP (fighter regiment) was the sole VVS regiment.

The MiG-25 was slow down Low, but could sustain high speeds up high.

In game terms the HAWK cannot shoot it down, its flying too high. Likewise only those fighters with AIM-7 or Sky Flash at High altitude can shoot up (F-15, Phantom FGR.2 and any others I've missed - Canadian Hornets and French Mirages would be fine). It could not be intercepted by those with AIm-9 Sidewinders.

Nike-Hercules and Patriot could intercept no problem.

The N-005 [High Lark 4} radar could look up 52 degrees and down 42 degrees. However it could LD/SD over flat terrain only. Range was not that impressive though. For example it could detect a bomber at 25 hexes, but only 7 hexes on the Deck. It can lockdown, but suffers full clutter effects on the Detection Table.

In any case training against low and slow targets commenced in late 1987.

Late production had decoys, even Iraq was using these in 1991.

Speeds are Low altitude was limited to 647 knots (Speed 4). Agility is around 4 G supersonic with missiles carried, so not a dogfighter.

The R-40RD/TD [AA-6 Acrid] had titanium construction and are cooled from the aircraft, it could be carried at high speeds. Head-on range is 60 km (13 hexes). It was quick - Mach 4.5, had excellent ECCM (combined radar/optical fuse) and a seeker similar to the R-24. Altitudes were given as 50-30000 meters. Obviously they are not agile, possibly one less than R-24?

The R-60M is limited to Mach 1.75 (Speed 7) when carried on MiG-25PD. R-60M was more carried for air policing role in peacetime. There was a drop tank, but it was not used in squadrons service as it limits speed to 860 knots (Speed 6).

This was a rare beast only 40 were produced to equip three squadrons, each 12 aircraft. All were tasked in Western Strategic Direction (West Germany).

It replaces the radar with the Jaguar suited has extensive internal jammers and decoys. Yagaur is similar to the F-4G system. It has a secondary ELINT role.

Its not the traditional US Wild Weasel - it would not go after tactical targets, but take out preplanned targets.

The Kh-58U [AS-11 Kilter] is hardened (titanium skin) to be used launched from very High altitudes at Mach 2. Range from this is 43 hexes (standard AS-11 range is 32 hexes). AS-11 can be fitted with a nuclear warhead. Max speed with missiles carried is 1365 knots (Speed 9)

Like all Soviet ARM, the missile seeker must be pre-adjusted on ground to the target type. Uniquely it can target Patriot.

Standard range is 1350 nm. With 4 AS-11 carried combat radius is 284 nm, with 2 missiles its 626 nm. Then add the Kh-58U range of 108 nm....

Its not the kind of aircraft that can hang around, the turn radius at Mach 2 is pretty large

Its only 200 nm from Brzheg, Poland to the Czech/German border. the 392 nm coverage almost makes the French border. So its launching AS-11 outside Nike-Hercules or Patriot range throughout West Germany.

MiG-25RB Foxbat B/D
The alphabet soup for the recon MiG-25 is simplified as the types are given for the East German unit: 4 MiG-25RBT, 2 MiG-25RBV, 3 MiG-25RBS, 5 MiG-25RBF

There are basically three types of recon MiG-25
1) Photo: MiG-25RBT, MiG-25RBV
2) ELINT: MiG-25RBF
3) SLAR: MiG-25RBS

MiG-25RBT and MiG-25RBV can be fitted with either ELINT or cameras. AS there are a few MiG-25RBF, its likely the RBT/RBV would use cameras. They carried the same cameras. They could reach out 90km (48 hexes) either side of track - they are daintily the side was looking cameras mentioned in Elusive Victory.

MiG-25RBF is pure ELINT and is fitted with a 435 nm datalink to send the information in realtime.

MiG-25RBS carries a SLAR, max range is 150 km (32 hexes) and covers a 25 km swath (5 hexes). Resolution is not that good, but can BDA large bridges.

Its likely they would parallel the border, at least initially.

They have internal jammer and decoys.

Recon radius is given as 496 nm, bombing radius 350 nm. In theory they could recon into France, Belgium and the Netherlands, if they could survive the defences. Bombing radius take sin much of West Germany.

They could carry up to 10 heat treated FAB-500M62T (6 fuselage, 4 under wings) - typical layout was 4. Iraq used these to bomb Khark Island during the 1980s. And only some bombs hit the Island (roughly 2 hexes wide). There is no bombsight, the bombing blind, based on navigation computer.

At 20,000 metres altitude and Mach 2, 76 seconds later the bombs impact 39 km (8 hexes) away. The bombs would hit anywhere +/-1200 metres in distance and +/- 2400 m left or right. In game terms there is no chance of hitting a military target on the battlefield

It could also carry nuclear bombs, which make more sense.

In both bombing and recon missions the targets are programmed into the navigation computer before takeoff, they pilot cannot view or change these.

The MiG-25RB was the fastest - no restriction below Mach 2.4, 15 minutes Mach 2.4-2.83 and 5 minutes above Man 2.84
