Hi all,

I'm looking for something very specific. As the title says: high-complexity but short (1 hour max), great with 2, and not abstract. Preferably not a card game--or at least not just cards (card-driven is fine). Even better if it has a historical theme.

Edit: looking for medium-heavy or heavy complexity-wise.

Neuroshima Hex and Dungeon Twister are my best answers (but I avoid historical so I'm sure I skipped some you'd want to look at)

Might not quite hit the high complexity threshold you want (depends on how complex you want): https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/177590/13-days-cuban-mis...

Maybe The Voyages of Marco Polo? It's 3.18 on the complexity scale, depending if that's heavy enough for you. It rewards plotting out a long term strategy. It will definitely play in less than an hour with 2 (but may go over with more players).

Great game, meets a lot of the criteria, but no way are you playing this in an hour...

The Castles of Burgundy can be played in an hour and offers nice deep choices. If you suffer from AP the game will be longer of course.

Another one worth taking a look at is Hanamikoji. It is a card game but last about 20 minutes and is very tense with lots of deep choices.

Certainly not an hour, but our games clock in at around 90-120 minutes. We tend to not over-think our plays, though.

Ulm (Great shorter length Euro)
Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu (I usually play two games of this in a row in about an hour)
Commands & Colors: Napoleonics (Or any C&C based game. You can probably knock out a scenario in about an hour)

I guess I'm showing my ignorance here, but how do you get high complexity in under an hour?

Viticulture Essential Edition - the first game may take a little long ne'er than 1 hour, bur once you've got the hang of it, it plays pretty fast
Ulm
The Voyages of Marco Polo - plays really well with two
Viceroy - not very heavy, but fun
Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small - excellent two player

Not historical but meets all the other criteria: The Gallerist

Very thematic with beautiful artwork, deep game, great with 2. A bit of a bear to set up but otherwise I think it would be perfect.

Can The Gallerist be considered a "short (1 hour max)" game?

More toward medium weight (can't think of any short, heavy games), but Oracle of Delphi has interesting decisions and plays in an hour (even for two AP prone folk--Castles of Burgundy takes us 3 hours for comparison).

+1 Tash-Kalar, although it's fairly abstract

After the first game or two, for 2 players we have always been able to play in about an hour. More players definitely not.

Glass Road is not super thematic but it is a very fast moving and deep game that can be played in 45-60 minutes.

Many good options here! Thank you all for your input. Some of these games were already on my radar, like 13 days, Glass Road, and The Gallerist; others--like Marco Polo, König von Siam, and Wir sind das Volk--sound very interesting and are new to me. I do not think that any of them are exactly what I was looking for, but they all look like games I would enjoy.
