Wondering if anyone had a good suggestion:

I'm heading back to Bayreuth for a few days to catch an opera and some inspiration. I'm looking for ideas where to stay for the week prior. I have some conditions...

What I'd love:

Gasthaus/hotel in Bayern in the woods. Hiking trails. Nestled in some mountains or hills at least. I want fresh air, quiet time with my wife, beer and fresh bread.

I've lived in Germany for four years, so I'd say I saw most of the American tourist destinations. Was thinking of Fussen - we've been there before, but that is a little far south for what I was thinking.

Any small towns or, I've got exactly what you are looking for, places?

Thanks...

-m

Re: Forrest Vacation - unrelated to BoardGames
Just a note on the subject title. Forrest is Gump, or the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

You must have meant 'forest.'

Have a great time!

I would take a look at the "Nationalpark Bayrischer Wald" which is quite a bit closer to Bayreuth than Fuessen. It is at the border to the Czech Republic with lots of nice hiking trails in a 'natural' forest. It does not have the Alp mountains as backdrop but is quite hilly. Here is a link to the regional tourist info site: https://www.ferienregion-nationalpark.de/ If you have not been to Prague yet that is also worth a visit while you are in the area.

Another option would be the Erzgebirge in the Eastern part of Germany. http://www.erzgebirge-touristik.de/urlaub/

Bayerischer Wald / Bavarian Forest
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bavarian_Forest

or

Thüringer Wald / Thuringian Forest

and Rennsteig trail
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennsteig

The latter one is not in Bavaria, but still much closer to Bayreuth than Füssen. Great nature, good beer (Köstritzer Schwarzbier!) and probably more quiet (less tourists) than in Bavarian Forest.

Agree with everything that already was said.

With Nürnberg, Dresden, Pilsen and Prague there are great old cities relatively close by. But certainly there are wonderful towns even closer (I just wouldn't know which are the nicest).

The Bayreuth region has a lot of small local breweries that might be worth visiting, e.g. in the "Fränkische Schweiz".

Furthermore I found the "Sächsische Schweiz" amazing with its mesa-like mountains. That's not too far away from Bayreuth, either.

With me putting this off as long as I did, my wife went ahead and already booked our stay in the woods south of Innsbruck! I can't complain - and fear not, I'll contribute a lot to the economy in Germany too!!

Thank you all SO much for the suggestions.

Mike
