It is, without a doubt, the most famous hip-hop song of the 1990s...and apparently it had more in mind than "that round thing in your face."

The lyrics:

Here's some background from NPR:

The three important women in my life -- wife and two daughters -- love this song. And they run from my eldest, who's all butt and boobs and thighs on her 5-10 frame, to my wife, who is built like a prima ballerina, slender and long with a tight little butt. So maybe this was the beginning (?) of the long struggle to appreciate, ahem, "healthy" women.

I don't know. I just know I do like big butts.

A black woman I know calls racist white women "Beckys" after this song.

It was the first song I heard the first time I was in the US (for my exchange year), so it will always have a special place in my heart.

I don't like big butts though, I like fit butts.

He's looking real sharp in his 1940's fedora. He's got nerves of steel, an iron will, and several other metal-themed attributes. His fur is water tight and he's always up for a fight.

This was never about 'healthy' women, just differently proportioned women, who have butts and boobs but still a tiny waist. As the song says very clearly.

Yeah, I remember my reaction of the time was simply to find the song overly crass.

Growing up in Seattle, we were all about SWASS (his first album). Mix always was a little silly, but they weren't quite so straight up novelty as "Baby" was.

That said, I still have to love the cover he did of "Iron Man" with Metal Curch:

(Note it's still pretty silly, especially the video)

If you would have told me back then that in 2017 this would become a staple of lame wedding DJs, or that merely putting this song on in any club or social situation would cause every female from age 20 to age 50 to head to the dancefloor to embarrass themselves attempting to shake their ass, I would not have believed you. But here we are.

Don't believe me?

Why do you think women who are having a great time, feeling good about and enjoying themselves is embarrassing?

I think that video is wonderful!!

Oh I love the song. It's right up there with "I'm on a boat!"

But Big Butts, I can deny. Not my thang.
