This game is frighteningly similar to Twilight Struggle but is from a different publisher and has different designers. Is there a story to this?

Yes, it's a deliberately slimmed down homage to TS. The designers have a lot of pre-pub articles around where they discuss their design goals. Worth a read.

Did they get Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthew's blessing do you know?

Why would they need to? There are plenty of other card-driven games sharing similarities. And I think 13 Days is a lot further away from Twilight Struggle than most worker placement games are from each other...

Is that a "no" then?

I have no idea, but found the tone of your posts unnecessarily accusatory.

The designers are active here on BGG. You could ask them. I don't recall them mentioning it, though.

Do you think they needed to for some reason?

Hi Andrew,

Have you played 13 Days and Twilight Struggle? I'm curious as to what makes you raise the question?

We never asked the TS designers before designing this. Nor do I think we should in any way, but I realize that opinions differ. I'm not sure if you're aware of the legal case with BANG! where a 100% mechanical copy was deemed legal. Mechanics are not protected, and if they were it would be as easy to make a case against TS as 13 Days.

Thankfully we know there is no issue. Jolly Roger games are directly connected to Jason Matthews and used him to review 13 Days before signing it. With his recommendation the decision was apparently easy.

Regards
Asger Granerud

I had already played Twilight Struggle when I first played 13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis. I was so struck by the similarity I double checked the designers and publishers to see if there was a connection and was surprised there wasn't. That is when I posted this thread to get some background.

I am aware of the legal implications of copying games.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

But there is no copying, i.e. violation of trademarks or copyrights. Since you're aware, you know that games cannot be protected by patents.

To what legal implications are you referring?

I am aware of the implications - that there is no legal restriction to copy a game.

Hi,

We owe Jason Matthews a lot. 13 Days would never have been without him (and Ananda) first designing Twilight Struggle (a game we are both huge fans of), and second endorsing 13 Days to Jim Dietz.

You may want to check out Twilight Squabble.
Different publisher and different designer with a frighteningly similar name.

Twilight Imperium (Third Edition)
1914: Twilight in the East
Colonial Twilight: The French-Algerian War, 1954-62
Anima: The Twilight of the Gods
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – The Movie Board Game
Twilight of the Ottomans: World War I in the Middle East
Clue: The Twilight Zone – Tower of Terror
Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game – The Order of the Silver Twilight

I've not played these either.
