One of the players noticed a black-and-white first edition of Fluxx, the card game world's answer to Calvinball, lying on the table and wanted to give it a shot. S., although he had not played the game, was aware of the game's dire reputation. However, after M. promised that the game would be short, S. and the others consented to play.

The game proceeded as expected. Cards were drawn and cards were laid. Tactics were limited and strategies were none. The only source of amusement was the seemingly Dadaist distribution of "keeper" cards. "Oh, look: toast." Disastrous cards with unfortunate interactions, like "Draw 5" and "Play all", seemed to rule the day, reducing the game to little more than idle card-flinging.

The game was indeed mercifully short. But then J. arrived and wanted to play. Since our stalwart gamers believe in gathering several data points when evaluating a game, another game was quickly agreed to. Unfortunately, the second game was longer and more ennui-stricken than the first. It is sufficient to say that all players were relieved when M. laid a card awarding victory to another player.

S. has reflected on this game's relationship to Guillotine, another card game that has been accused of introducing uncontrollable chaos. S. admits to enjoying Guillotine as a lighter game, and feels that as Guillotine offers at least a minimal amount of pleasure and has possibilities to reward forward thinking, it cannot be reasonably compared to a meritless game such as Fluxx... at least not without using higher math.
