More Professional Werewolf 2

Theme – An isolated village, under assault by enemy (Evil) forces.

Roles - variations on standard. No conversion. No neutral players.

The game will use the Cassandra movement system. Players may move between the locations during the day, but their location at Dusk determines their available night action and influences the vote tally.

Location only matters at Dusk; players are asked not to move location between Dusk and Dawn, and should take great care not to move after Dusk is called.

Players all begin the game with alignments (Good or Evil), but there are no roles; players will have or be able to gain Professions, giving them enhanced abilities to use in particular locations, some of which will be analogous to roles such as Seer, Bodyguard or Vigilante. The game also does not have 'Wolves'. Some Evil players, but not all, will start with the Assassin profession which enables them to attempt nightkills.

Victory for Evil:
Parity is reached between Evil Assassins and other players.
or
All NPCs are eliminated.

Victory for Good:
All Evil players are eliminated.
or
All Evil Assassins and the Assassin trainer are eliminated.

If victory conditions for both Good and Evil are reached simultaneously, Evil are awarded the win.

There are 7 NPCs in the game, each positioned at one of the locations. An Assassin may choose to attack an NPC instead of a player. If all NPCs are eliminated, Evil will immediately win.
Each day, the village collectively needs to feed itself; one unit of food must be provided for each player currently alive, whether Good or Evil, and for each of the remaining NPCs. On any day that there is insufficient food available, one NPC will be eliminated, in the following order: Priest Trainer, Stone Cutter, Ranger Trainer, Cook, Soldier Trainer, Bones, Assassin Trainer.
It does not matter what the shortfall is, only one NPC will leave.
Any food stores will be publicly announced each Dawn.

Re: More Professional Werewolf
Locations

As shown above, all standard locations except the Woods connect to the Forum. The Woods may only be accessed via the Graveyard, and the Graveyard and Mortuary interconnect. Shadows may be accessed from any location but players may only exit Shadows to the Forum.
Players can move up to 10 times during the day, but are asked to remain stationary between Dusk and Dawn. Each player may undertake one action during the night relating to a profession, and may be affected by one or more passive effects relating to location.
Many of the locations permit training in a profession, if the relevant NPC is still present. Each player in such a training location may nominate in modchat for one among them to receive the training, and if the choice is unanimous (abstentions being ignored) then the training will occur. A player alone in a location is automatically judged to be self-nominating.

Forum – no NPC
Players in this location at Dusk will have their votes doubled. There is no Forum chat.
All players in the Forum at Dusk may vote in modchat for the new Mayor. If that player is in the Forum and is chosen unanimously by those in the Forum, that player becomes the new Mayor, effective immediately.
Specialist role - Mayor

Kitchen - NPC: Cook
Food is inherently perishable, and surplus newly foraged food cannot be carried over from one day to the next.
However, until or unless the Cook is eliminated, surplus fresh food will be made into non-perishable food at the end of each day, and this can be used on subsequent days to make up for shortfalls in fresh food.
Each player in the Kitchen does not require feeding.
While the Cook is still alive, all players in the Kitchen at Dusk may vote in modchat for one among them to be trained as Chef. If the decision is unanimous and that player does not already have the Chef profession, that player gains the Chef profession.
Specialist role - Assassin, Chef

Seminary - NPC: Priest Trainer
While the Priest Trainer is still alive, all players in the Seminary at Dusk may vote in modchat for one among them to be trained. If the decision is unanimous and that player does not already have the Priest profession, that player gains the Priest profession.
The first Priest to be nominated for training will gain the Seer profession.
Specialist role – Priest, Seer

Shrine - NPC: Saint's Bones
Players in this location at Dusk will learn how many Evils remain alive in the game, as long as the Saint's Bones are still there.
Specialist role - Seer

Mortuary
Players in this location at Dusk can view the alignment of players who died in the previous 24 hours (unless dying in the Shadows).
Specialist role - Priest

Graveyard - NPC Stone cutter.
Players in this location can read the gravestones of all players who died more than 24 hours previously. Gravestones will indicate a player's profession, but nothing else.
If the Stone Cutter is eliminated, no new gravestones will be made.
Specialist role - Priest

Woods
There is no chat in the Woods.
Each Good player in the Woods will forage to bring back food to the Village. Evil players may also forage if they choose to do so (and should specify either way in modchat).
A normal player brings back 3 food.
A Chef brings back +3 food if there is a Chef or the Cook in the Kitchen
A Ranger brings back 7 food.
The Marksman brings back 15 food.
Specialist roles - Ranger, Marksman, Chef

Academy - NPC: Soldier Trainer.
While the Soldier Trainer is still alive, all players in the Academy at Dusk may vote in modchat for one among them to be trained. If the decision is unanimous and that player does not already have the Soldier profession, that player gains the Soldier profession.
The first Soldier to be trained will gain Lynch-Brutal status (may kill one of his voters if lynched). Lynch-Brutal is not a profession, for the purposes of Seer.
Specialist Role - Soldier

Archery Range - NPC: Ranger Trainer
While the Ranger Trainer is still alive, all players in the Archery Range at Dusk may vote in modchat for one among them to be trained. If the decision is unanimous and that player does not already have the Ranger profession, that player gains the Ranger profession.
If there is no Marksman then a Ranger receiving training will become the Marksman.
Specialist Roles - Ranger, Marksman

School - NPC: Assassin Trainer
While the Assassin Trainer is still alive, all players in the School at Dusk may vote in modchat for one among them to be trained. If the decision is unanimous and that player does not already have the Assassin profession, that player gains the Assassin profession.
The first Assassin to be trained will gain Tough status (will survive at most one lynch or Assassination attempt). Tough is not a profession, for the purposes of Seer.
Specialist Role - Assassin

Shadows - no chat
Shadows can be accessed from all locations except Woods, but exits only to the Forum.
An Assassin in the Shadows can attempt to use the once-per-game-per-Assassin 'Remote Kill' option.
Any non-Assassin in the Shadows overnight will die if there at the same time as any Assassin. The body of a player who dies in the Shadows will never be found.
Specialist Role - Assassin

Re: More Professional Werewolf
Professions
Each profession may be held by Good or by Evil players.
A player may hold multiple professions, but in that case must each night designate in modchat which one profession is to be used.
A player may choose to 'turn off' a profession even if it is his/her only one. In the absence of an explicit order to do so, a player with one profession will be considered to be using it.
For the purposes of player-to-player interaction within the rules, unless otherwise stated a player is only interpreted as being a profession if that player has the profession and is using it. So, for example, a player with the Soldier profession who is not using it (either has it 'turned off' or has chosen to use a different profession) does not count as a Soldier when an Assassination or Spoilage attempt is made.

Mayor
The Mayor's vote is worth 3 when the Mayor is in the Forum at Dusk.
There can only be one Mayor.
Each Dawn, the Mayor is advised of the total number of players with the Soldier profession and players with the Ranger profession still alive. A player with both those professions will be counted in both totals and no distinction is made for alignment. The start Mayor will receive the D1 information.

Priest
If only Priests are present in the Mortuary (that is, all players in the Mortuary have and are using the Priest profession), they will get full profession information on the dead players there, in addition to their alignments.
By inference, if a Priest gets full information, every other player present in the Mortuary must also have and have used the Priest profession.

If a Priest is alone in the Graveyard at Dusk, he gets a private player chat with a selected dead player until the following Dusk (but need not remain in the Graveyard throughout the next Day). Each dead player can only be consulted in this way once. (Dead players who have chosen to join a communal or spoiler-ridden deadchat will be unavailable).

Soldier
There can be no Assassination in any location other than the Woods unless a player is targeted for Assassination by more players than there are Soldiers; any attempt will simply fail.
Soldiers will learn that an attempt was made.
Assassins making an attempt will learn that there were too many Soldiers but not the exact number.
Soldiers can block the Assassin food spoiling ability in the same manner as they can block kills, and are similarly advised that a spoiling attempt was made.
Note that Soldiers provide no protection in the Woods.

Seer
If only Seers are present in the Shrine (that is, all players in the Shrine have and are using the Seer profession), each gets a clear view of a target player, learning their profession(s), alignment and location that night.
By inference, if a Seer gets a view in the Shrine, every other player present in the Shrine must also have and have used the Seer profession.

Ranger
A Ranger in the Woods may shoot and kill another player in the Woods. Toughness will not protect a player from Ranger shots.
It is possible for two Rangers to kill each other.
A Ranger taking a shot will only fail if the target is not in the Woods.
If a Ranger is taking a shot at another player, he can still forage.
A Ranger will also have a notion at Dawn of how many players were in the woods the previous night. Specifically, for each player in the woods I shall roll a die and on 1-5 that player's presence is added to the total of players noticed. This will be done separately for each Ranger. Thus a Ranger may get an underestimate but will not get an overestimate.

Assassin
An Assassin can make a kill attempt on any player in the same location during the night. If there are fewer Soldiers in the location than Assassins targeting a player, that player will die. If there are at least as many Soldiers as kill-attempts on a given player, the Assassins will each learn 'too many Soldiers' and the Soldiers will be informed that an attempt was made.
An attack in the Woods is unaffected by Soldiers, but the attempt will fail if the target is absent or is the Marksman.
An Assassin in the kitchen can spoil (destroy) all non-perishable food, instead of making an NPC or player kill attempt. Soldiers can prevent spoilage just as they can prevent kills.

Remote Kill
Each player with the Assassin profession who is in the Shadows may make a once-per-game-kill attempt on a player (not an NPC) in any location other than the Woods, using the same rules on Soldier protection, and stacking with any other kill attempts on the same player in the same location. The Assassin must specify where the target player is. If the kill fails, there will be no explanation given to differentiate between too many Soldiers or the target being absent from the specified location. A remote kill attempt made against a player in the Shrine will fail if the Bones have not been eliminated. Simultaneous attempts on Bones by direct presence and on a player by remote kill are not viable; the remote kill would automatically fail.
If the remote kill attempt fails for any reason, the Assassin may try again on a subsequent night. If the target player is in the specified location and is killed by Assassination, even if the Remote Kill was not necessary for the death, the Kill ability is considered exhausted.

Marksman
Only one player can ever be Marksman.
The Marksman is superior to a standard Ranger in the following ways:
- Foraging returns 15 food instead of 7.
- Marksman cannot be successfully Assassinated in the Woods (though he can still be killed by a Ranger). Any Assassination attempt will simply fail.
- Marksman in the Woods may view for a specific player and will be told if that player was in the woods the previous night.
- Marksman receives at Dawn the exact total of how many players were in the Woods, without the error potential in the information given to a Ranger.

Chef
A foraging Chef gathers +3 food, as long as either the Cook or at least one Chef is in the Kitchen.
Each Chef in the Kitchen can Store up to 2 food if there is surplus fresh food produced and the Cook has been eliminated.

Re: More Professional Werewolf
Game start
At the start of the game there will be at least 2 Soldiers, 2 Assassins, 1 Seer, 1 Seer, 1 Priest and the Mayor.
Note that a single player may hold multiple professions (even at the start of the game).
There may or may not be Rangers and additional Assassins and Soldiers, of either alignment.
The number of Evils and pre-learned professions will be determined by the mod based on player number and not publicly disclosed.
Some of the Evil players will be designated Max Evil and will have a private chatroom (aka Wolfchat)
Any remaining Evil players will be designated Aux Evil and each will begin the game knowing the name of one other Aux Evil, if there is one.
The village starts with 10 non-perishable food stored.

Dusk and Vote tallies
Dusk will be at 4pm.
Cassandra's vote tally will be the only one published.
At Dusk, the moderator will apply the additional vote strengths for those in the Forum (including Mayor if present in the Forum).
LHLV will still apply to break ties on the amended totals.
The player dying by lynch will be announced.
In the event of the high vote-getter being Tough (via the School), the next in line will be lynched instead. No announcement to this effect will be made, though the Tough player will be advised that Toughness has been used.
In the event that the lynched player is lynch-Brutal (via the Academy), the Brutal-killed player and the lynched player will both be announced as dying together, but no further clarification will be given.
Brutal will not kill Tough, but will remove Toughness.
In the event that the same player is both Tough and lynch-Brutal, Toughness will prevent lynch and Brutal will not be activated on that occasion.
Each player's night action options will be restricted by their location at Dusk (which will remain unaltered until Dawn, except for fatalities) and their active profession.
At Dawn, the amount of stored food will be announced, along with any player fatalities. NPC fatalities will only be apparent to players who visit an NPC location.
Dead players will only get access to spoilers and communal deadchat after they have been consulted by a Priest in the Graveyard (or when all Priests and the Priest trainer are eliminated).

Summary of possible Night Actions
Active (role-related) – a player may do at most one of these
View living player (Seer in Shrine)
View dead player for full information (Priest in Mortuary)
Shoot a player (Ranger or Marksman in Woods)
Target a player (Assassin in any location)
Remote Target a player (Assassin in Shadows, one success per game per Assassin)
Guard (Soldier in any location except Woods)
Preserve food (Chef in Kitchen)

Passive (location related) – a player may do as many of these as apply
Vote for a player to be trained (Seminary, School, Kitchen, Academy, Archery Range)
Receive training (Seminary, School, Kitchen, Academy, Archery Range)
Forage (Woods)
View dead player (Mortuary for alignment, Graveyard for profession)

Re: More Professional Werewolf
Notes to players:

Starting food requirements are going to be 7+number of players. My intention is that 25%-40% of the village (depending on Ranger numbers ) will need to forage in order to maintain stores. As players, and particularly Rangers, are depleted, this percentage will increase, which could be countered by the training of a Marksman.
Marksman is retrainable - there can be only one, but if that one dies, a replacement may be trained. An attempt to train as a Marksman will fail if there is already a live one.

Each Dawn, the current Mayor (if there is one) will be advised the Ranger and Soldier total in the village, so that food resources are not completely opaque.

Clarifications
Scheduling of dead stuff

D1 lynch will be in the mortuary N1, and have his stone carved.
N1 kill(s) and D2 lynch will be in the mortuary N2 and their stones will be carved (assuming the continued presence of the Cutter)
And so on.

D1 lynch will be buried at Dusk on D2, and his headstone erected for viewing by anyone in the graveyard from N2 onwards.
N1 kill(s) and D2 lynch will be in the graveyard from N3 onwards.
And so on.

If the Cutter were to be lost (for example) on N3 - either from starvation or kill - then the last marked grave will be for the D2 lynch (and brutal, if applicable).

Note that there is no time limit or need for the Cutter to be around for a Priest to speak with a dead player in the Graveyard, but that each dead player can only be consulted once, after which they are admitted to the spoiler deadchat.

Action resolution
In this order:
All training (voting and profession acquisition) at Dusk
All views
All foraging and eating
All kills and spoilage
NPC departure due to food shortage

Active and Passive events at night

Training - training is a Passive thing. It happens to you. You may do one Active thing each night and any number of Passive things.

Thus it would be possible to train in the Assassin School (Passive) and then kill the Assassin trainer (Active), since killing happens after training.

A Soldier could use Soldier to guard a room (Active) and at the same time train in whichever discipline the room offered (Passive).

Similarly, a Ranger could shoot someone in the Woods (Active) and at the same time forage (Passive) - this is explicitly stated in the rules, and is consistent with the above.

Similarly a Soldier could protect and/or an Assassin make a kill or spoilage attempt in the Kitchen (Active) while at the same time not needing food (Passive).

However, a Soldier Priest could not both guard AND talk to the dead in the graveyard (since each requires the respective Active profession). And a Soldier Priest on Soldier action in the Mortuary would prevent all Priests learning full details on the dead, and a Soldier Seer could not both guard and make a view in the Shrine.

Possible Group Tactics
There are a couple of possible 'all players do X' plans which have been discussed previously – summarised below, each has some obvious flaws, quite apart from the reluctance many players instinctively have to obeying an imposed group protocol.

Fortress Kitchen
If food stocks are high, all players could hunker down in the kitchen and train in turn as Chefs, not consuming food. Remaining NPCs (including the Cook) will gradually eat down the food stores and thereafter will leave but as long as there are more Soldiers than Assassins remaining, there will be no Assassinations or Spoilage. Players will however have to lynch blind, since there can be no further views and minimal information on the dead. The loss of NPCs will produce a countdown timer for the game end if Good cannot lynch the Evils fast enough.

Living Wild
If Good are confident that they have a Good Marksman, all players could try to rough it by going every day to the Woods, using the food-generating, invulnerability and kill abilities of the Marksman as an extreme form of rollcall. Unfortunately, since there is no chatroom in the Woods, Evil Assassins can sneak away (via the Shadows if Good sets a player in the Graveyard to monitor traffic) and kill off the NPCs while at the same time avoiding the Marksman's kill. Assassins could alternatively just stay in the Woods and kill Good players other than the Marksman until they reached parity since their target audience would be corralled there by common consent.

I'm willing to play, but this game definitely overschedules me, and looking at the rest of the plate and its complication, I'll warn you guys in advance you're getting the super budgeted version of Tok if I do. Basically, I'm willing to play beyond my limit only because I like playing games with Anna. meeple

Looking at some of the rest of you, you are in a lot of the other games I'll be juggling this with. If it were just a relatively simple ruleset I'd shrug, but as it is, I'm actually worried we won't do Javal's ruleset justice?

If he's okay with that, and you guys are alright with the fact that I'm never TWing this game unless insomnia or something happens, you only get me in the present and are going to have to tell me what to do, I'm up for trying it with you.

Well, we have a skimpy start roster as it is; if we get any/many no-shows I shall have to push the start back, which sounds convenient for you. Would rather have a Fang than not, even if you can't give your complete attention in this direction

There's really no good time for me to start more games, but I'll start them none the less and ask to replace out if it becomes overwhelming. I absolutely can't play anything the week of July 4th as I'll be at Dice Tower Con with Rorab, LJ, Stone, Amekins and others. I'd love to play your game Javal, so I'll stick around as long as people understand that several of us are super booked up already.
