I played a match as Bal Bas Beta vs. Rook, and at range, Rook used entangling vines vs one of BBB's normals.

BBB took damage and was knocked down, but does it get Rook out of range?

Also, if not at range, and BBB plays a normal into Rock wall or Entangling Vines, does he still set range next turn?

Also, if at range, non range moves do not deal damage. Does that include Rook's special blocks?

Rook's special blocks will deal damage (and knock down in the case of Entangling Vines) while at range but they don't count as hitting so they will not end range.

The no damage to BBB at range only applies to combat cards it doesn't effect special abilities. So things like Rook's special blocks, Lum's Blackjack, and Gloria's Overdose will still deal damage to BBB.

If Rook special blocks a normal while not at range combat will be set to range.

Thanks for the reply!

That was my interpretation as well.

It's a pretty tough matchup for rook!

Yeah it can be a tough one for Rook. He's got several tools that can start making it pretty interesting once you get into it though.

Luckily all of Rook's face cards get work done

Rook K is very strong vs BBB. BBB only has one normal card that can beat Rook K so each 6 that BBB losses makes Rook K increasingly more safe.

Rook J will beat all normals and BBB's J.

Rook's Q is normally used as a combo ender but against BBB it should be saved as a poke because it is another card that beats all his normals.

In the early game Rook should definitely save his special blocks for Range. From the BBB side playing that Q is scary when there's a good chance Rook has Stone Wall. Entangling Vines is also helpful for getting out of range. If Rook gets a successful block with Entangling Vines he's got a 50/50 mix up to get out of range next turn (either play a 4, J, Q to beat normals/face cards or block to beat BBB block).

there can be some good back and forth in this mu but it definitely takes patience and strong nerves when playing as Rook.

To add to what Joshua said, save your Jokers for use as cobat cards at Range. They beat all of BBB's offensive ranged options, end Range, and get you Jokers that are also good reveals at Range.

Yeah, that's sound. BBB isn't that combo oriented most of the time, so gold bursting is generally better than blue.

I think it's good for BBB to dodge a lot at range in the hopes of making his opponent waste his breakout options, so gold bursting isn't always safe, but it's one of rooks few real options.

Rook's easiest way out is probably just to rock armor his way out of it.

I need to correct my above post. Rook 4 would not beat BBB normals on an Entangling Vines turn.

The BBB dodges is where patience will be needed. If your opponent is prone to using all his dodges once they get range you'll just have to block until you think they'll stop playing them or you think BBB is out of them. Fortunately BBB only has 8 dodges in his deck.

It's almost as if you should try to read your opponent, lol.

Yeah, just dodging until you run out is predictable... until it isn't. Gotta get them guessing about whether you're going to dodge, poke, or extensor grab.
