Glenn Drover's Empires: Galactic Rebellion

This is a great price for an otherwise very expensive game (normally $119.99).
http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/233481

In addition, the Empires: Galactic Rebellion – Oligarchs Expansion is on sale for $19.99 (normally $35.99).

Thanks to BGG user baelthazar for the heads up on this.

fwiw in case I'm not the only one who hadn't heard of this game but had heard of AoE3... this game....

REIMPLEMENTS: AGE OF EMPIRES III: THE AGE OF DISCOVERY, EMPIRES: AGE OF DISCOVERY

and indeed $60 - $25 gift cert for later use = $35 for the game, is not just hot, smoking hot! though I sold my AoE3 several years ago...

if you mean tom vassel, lol, imho adding geek buddies with similar gaming tastes and doing "geekbuddy analysis" is far superior than one person's so called "review". fwiw there are also 6 reviews at

It is based off of AoE III, but I would also recommend watching Tom's review. He was super excited about it, but the end game is supposedly horrendous. Glen Drover has a habit of not play testing his games.

Note that my tastes also don't line up with Tom's frequently, but he usually does a good job identifying large problems with a game.

no solo option, so in spite of the incredible deal..

Besides, good games sell themselves, don't require injections of free offers.

That's why they're practically paying people to buy this game. The Kickstarter was definitely a hard pass.

Business news from over a decade ago doesn't have much bearing on Drover's design bonafides today.

I backed Empires: Age of Discovery and was satisfied. I passed on Galactic Rebellion because it didn't look different enough to me.

I tend to enjoy Tom Vasel's reviews, but I think that he went a little overboard on this one. The game certainly isn't perfect (not (m)any are), but it isn't nearly as bad as he made it out to be in the end. Most of the other reviews for it don't really mention the end-game as being a significant problem. It seems like the price tends to be a bigger issue (which is probably true). FWIW, I've made a few tweaks and have enjoyed my plays of the game. I'm actually kind of jealous of this sale, as I traded for the game within the last two months, but would've rather bought it at the current sale price, instead.

So, I have not played Galactic Rebellion, but the end game procedure seems flawed (especially when compared with AoEIII).

It's a three hour game that ends with a largely luck dependent pulling cubes from a bag over and over. Having that much randomness at the end of a long game is not for me.

I much prefer the end game of AoEIII where players dictate deterministic battles at the end.

I had such high hopes for this one but was so very very disappointed at the graphic design choices and endgame mechanism. The fact that they have to practically give it away to clear out the overstock says it all. SO sad.

The same people/person that approved the board design in Defenders of the Realm.

Many, including Glenn Drover himself:
