Hi

1. In the main game are there no 'hero cards' like there are in the expansion sets e.g Theif/Fighter?

2. What is the 'gold pool' and 'combat pool'? Are they areas where cards go...do they get discarded if you don't use them?

1) Correct, with the base game both players start with the same hand.

2) During each player's turn they will play cards from their hand giving them either, Gold, Combat points, Health or other actions, The total combat points are all addeed up and then assigned to damage either the other players Champions(cards) or the player.

Gold and combat pools are just imaginary common funds that result from adding up the gold and damage values (separately) from all the cards you play during your turn, so you can then decide to spend them as you wish. Both pools will empty at the end of your turn, so unused gold is just lost. Combat points will never be lost as you can always assign any remaining damage to your opponent.

With the exception that if your total combat does not exceed the total defense of your opponent's Guards. In that case, combat does get lost.

For example, if you have 4 combat and your opponent has a Guard with 5 defense, then those 4 combat are lost at the end of your turn. You cannot hit your opponent with it, since your opponent is protected by that Guard.
