Hi, I'm completely new to L5R.

What does the "5 Rings" refer to?

Different kinds of magic?

Do different clans specialize in different types of magic?

Thanks

The name derives from The Book of Five Rings (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_Five_Rings) which has the five rings of: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void.

The L5R CCG had a 20 year run and an established storyline. The new LCG is starting over from the beginning and looking to FFG is looking to expand on their own stories or twists on familiar stories.

To add to the above: In the CCG, there was an additional win condition called Enlightenment. Each ring was represented by it's own card. If you could manage to get all five cards into play, which was harder than it sounds and almost necessitated a specialized deck build, you achieved an Enlightenment Victory and won the game.

Welcome to the game! At least in classic L5R, the Rings corresponded to elements but also had some thematic motifs. Void tended to be knowledge (card draw), water was mobility (movement / reassignment), Earth was defense / stoicism, air was finesse (magic) and fire was skill (dueling).

In the new game each conflict will have a ring associated with it (chosen by the player) that has a different in game effect. So they no longer have that enlightenment victory condition, but have tried to tie it into the central mechanic of the game.
