So the gangster arrives in R'Lyeh and the encounter is to battle Cthulhu. Given his special ability of reducing a stamina loss by one and Cthulhu's attack reads:

Each investigator lowers either his maximum Sanity or maximum Stamina by 1 (his choice). After Cthulhu attacks, 1 doom token is placed back on Cthulhu's doom track if it isn't already full

It would appear that McGlen cannot lose. Could someone with a bit more knowledge tells me how this one is played out?

Cheers

Maximum Stamina and Stamina ain't the same

Your Stamina can never exceed your maximum, so McGlen's ability is useless in this situation.

yeah, I was thinking that too. He already had one Stamina loss before going into battle so starting out with 6. This basically means 6 turns to take Cthulhu down before being devoured, right?

McGlen's default maximums are 3 Sanity and 7 Stamina. So at full strength he would go down at the end of round 9.

If his maximum Stamina was reduced by one before the final Battle, then he would last one round less.

If he simply was low on Stamina or Sanity, this would not matter as far as Cthulhu's attack is concerned since that affects the maximums.

If he simply was low on Stamina or Sanity, this would not matter as far as Cthulhu's attack is concerned since that affects the maximums.
Please remember that Cthulhu's "Stirs in Slumber" ability is still in effect, so if Cthulhu is the Ancient One, McGlen's maximums would most likely be 2 Sanity and 6 Stamina and thus would likely survive to round 7.

There are cards which can cancel the Ancient One's attack for a turn, such as the Warding Statue and the Masquerade of Night from The King in Yellow.
Using the Epic Battle Cards from Kingsport can vastly change and usually shorten the number of rounds investigators can survive in Final Battle.
As stated, other effects that affect maximum Stamina or Sanity, such as certain Injuries or Madnesses from Dunwich, Magical effects Third Eye or Inner Beast from The King in Yellow, or the stirs in slumber effect of the Arkham Nights version of Cthulhu, would also affect Cthulhu Final Battle survivability.

If Cthulhu is encountered due to the R'lyeh dual color Other World encounter from The Curse of the Dark Pharaoh then his "Stirs in Slumber" ability would not take effect, and McGlen could last until round 9 (barring all the other effects already mentioned).
