I refuse to buy a game where Burt Lancaster and Jimmy Stewart only get one star, so I made my own. I changed Action/Adventure into the role of Entertainment and put Comedy in Action's spot. I think this more represents today's climate. As the four quarterly awards I used (in order) Cannes, MTV Movie Awards, Golden Globes, & Oscars. Plus, the Razzies as the Worst Movie.

I have to tell you: Giving names to the camera crew already IS too geeky.

I'm surprised you just selected music styles, instead of famous composers - not to mention that you put orchestra below pop/rock/rap! Well, I might choose:
3 stars: John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Basil Poledouris
2 stars: Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore, Vangelis, James Horner

1 star: Alan Silvestri, Brad Fiedel, Trevor Jones, Hans Zimmer
0 star: Philip Glass, Danny Elfman

John Carpenter, 0 stars? Ouch. I guess I can understand, though ... after The Thing, his work really went downhill.

That's because there is no minus-one music token.

Danny Elfman is a totally mediocre composer who is unable to create a memorable theme. That's most evident in the first "Spiderman" movie, when the hero first appears in his uniform and swing among the skycrapers of Manhattan; the music does not help at all, makes me feel nothing, and I just think how much better would be to listen to the classic cartoon theme at that moment. Why Sam Raimi didn't hire Joseph LoDuca, who worked with him in the "Hercules" and "Xena" series, is beyond my understanding.

Um, if his themes are so unmemorable, why do movie studios use them for teaser-trailers to movies that he hasn't even worked on?

Personally, I've been quite unhappy with recent Williams soundtracks. He's too loud, pushy and self-plagiarizing. I don't want the soundtrack to make me think about a different movie (related only by composer) while I'm still in the theatre.

Re:Creating the home version - My Modern Tiles
Danny Elfman has certainly created some memorable music, but he often writes his scores to the specifications imposed on him by the film, so he is not without restrictions on his imagination. His work with Oingo Boingo ran the full spectrum from wild and crazy party music to the occasional quiet and pensive number, and many of the songs were absolute standouts. His film scores have ranged from merely good to excellent, and he was the composer of one of the most recognizable television themes of all time with the Simpsons.
Give the guy a break!

Re:Creating the home version - My Modern Tiles
When I think of Danny Elfman, a whole SCORE of ... um, scores come to mind:

The Simpsons
Beetlejuice
Men in Black
Edward Scissorhands
Batman
Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure
The Nightmare Before Christmas

Not only do I remember the movies, but I remember the music that went with them, too. To say he doesn't come up with memorable music is a bit mystifying, at least to me. Aside from John Williams, he's the only other film composer whose style I recognize, even if I don't already know that he's the composer.

Wow, a Danny Elfmar thread on BGG. laugh

I think Elfman's stuff is best combined with the vision of Tim Burton. They jsut mesh well. His work on most other films not directed by Burton, I'm not enamored of.

Hmm. I picked people because of their status, not because of my likes or dislikes. The people that I really didn't like weren't included on here. I feel like this is a realistic assesment of our modern Star higherarchy.

The stars in the standard game however are not acurate.

Funny to come back after two months and see that Danny Elfman has a few defenders. Randall was the funniest (no offense intended). I imagine what kind of restrictions (other than his own limitations) would have prevented Elfman from creating memorable - or at the very least, suitable - super-hero themes for "Spiderman" and "The Flash". And about "The Simpsons" theme being "one of the most recognizable of all times"... Come on, it has been on the air for 15 years!!! Give ME a break!

Michael, I'm unhappy with John Williams recent works, too, and the last I enjoyed was "Jurassic Park". However, when I rate him, I consider all his great classics - "Star Wars", "Superman", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", just to name a few. How anyone can compare Danny Elfman to him is something I fail to understand, to say the least.

And if Elfman's sytle is easily recognizable, it's because he just keeps repeating himself.

I admit his music works in some Tim Burton's movies, as Fawkes pointed out, but that's all. "Planet of the Apes" was an exception, where his lack of talent was as obvious as in any of his works with other directors.
