Anyone have thoughts on the ups and downs to each of the inserts that have come out for Gloomhaven? What does each have that is unique? If you have one please tell us your thoughts on it.

In my opinion, the Daedalus one is really pretty with the stain and gold paint.

The Broken Token one comes with tuck boxes for the cards, and is also nice looking. And for a short time $10 cheaper than Daedalus.

I haven't checked the others out, but functionally, I think you're looking at the same idea. It's just a matter of what you like better in terms of finishing touches. I couldn't really tell from the Broken Token one if they labeled what pieces go where, like "water" or "barrels" or "slime" or whatever. I do have other inserts from them that do have those markings, but I just didn't see them in the pictures (that I recall).

I really am debating getting one. It's just so hard to pay $70 for an accessory to a $100 game.

$170 is still a lot cheaper than a Descent addiction.

There were a few things I liked in particular about the Broken Token one, and these are why I ended up buying it.

* The tuckboxes for the units, which are labeled. This makes them all very easy to find, sort, use, and clean up.

* Nothing in their solution uses the approach of "after you pack up the game, just throw the rest of the stuff our insert didn't account for in the top of the box!" Everything in the Broken Token insert has a space. The tiles have a somewhat loose "big tray", but they still have a tray of some kind. I believe the other solutions have you just toss stuff on top.

* I really like the way they sort the little obstacle, door, and terrain tiles. This approach makes the most sense to me and demands the lowest overhead in terms of thought.

As far as cost, I plan to play Gloomhaven more or less constantly. If I can turn 30 minutes or more of downtime between missions into time spent playing the game, I'm happy.

Hard to justify the price. But if I had to get one, i like broken token due to the tuckboxes.

I only have the MeepleRealty and parts of it are great.
- the card holder with handle is great, just the right amount of space (but I did have to print off some card dividers)
- the storage for the monsters & room bits are also great
- character tuck box storage that keeps the bits & minis in the original boxes

But they sort of gave up and put a 'catch all' flat tray for the square monster cards and other random bits. I also felt the token tray was unnecessarily tall and yet cramped because of the decision to curve the bottom. And like many of the inserts, offered no solution for the map tiles.

So I ended up using about 2/3 of the insert and form-coring the bits that didn't work. I'm happy with the end result, but sad that it wasn't perfect right out of the box. (Their trickarion insert was a work of genius)

They are all pretty amazing, but for me they are addressing the problem of storage by thinking "inside the box" because that is what their companies are all about.

I think $70 is not only a fair price, but a must have if you plan on keeping the box as the vessel of your game. However, again for me, the sheer size and physical weight of this game has me looking for something that does away with the box entirely. My reasoning is that if I am going to spend $70 for storage, then I might as well go all out with the bling and do something special (btw, no clue yet what that is).

As for the original question; I have bought Daedalus inserts and Broken Token and you can't go wrong with either. The Daedalus are light-weight wood but not brittle. The look beautiful for games that you take the insert out and put on the table. The Broken Token have an organized neat look that will quell anyone's compulsive disorder. IMO the Broken Token were easier to assemble, but that could just be due to the complexity of the insert.

Lastly, the customer service at Daedalus is top notch. Replacements come fast (and sometimes assembled). As for Broken Token, I have had no interactions with their customer service, so I can't comment. However, you may infer what you will about that in itself.

Good luck on your decision!

If price is an issue, you can easily design your own in Blender (free 3D software) and then send your files to treadstock.com. It'd probably cost between $13-20 that way.

It's a no-brainer for me. They all accomplish the same thing so it comes down to price.

$50 - Meeple Realty
$70 - Broken Token
$80 - Daedalus

I like the BT tuck boxes but not for an extra $20.
I like the Daedalus stain and gold paint but not for an extra $30.

Meeple Realty's is $60. Still cheaper but that closes the gap quite a bit. I'll be getting the TBT insert myself as I prefer what they're doing as far as organization and am willing to spend the extra money on it.

I'm currently using the Meeple Realty insert for my first edition, and was planning on getting the Daedalus insert for the new printing, but may reconsider and get the Broken Token insert instead. I really like BT's individual player trays and the etched guide for how to put away the map tiles. I've never had any trouble fitting the map tiles in MR's insert, mind, but I do like having the thought put into how to store them. I also find it curious both BT & MR inserts have special slots for the bless & curse tokens, which don't have any use. [Edit 7/18 - I just saw my friend's BT insert, and despite the pics/videos showing slots for blessing & curse tokens (10 total slots), the production copy only has 8 slots in the status effect token tray!]

One thing I like about the MR insert is there's a surprising amount of extra space. I ditched some tokens (bless, curse, 5 gold, 10 XP, all the damage tokens), and the original monster stands. In their place, I was able to separate out the summoning tokens some more, fit in a whole bunch of tiny D6's and spin-down d20's, laminated character & party sheets, wet-erase & permanent markers, and a whole lot more 3rd party standee bases. I am a little bit concerned about the separate box for the monster stand bases in the BT insert. It looks like they have to be put away just so, which adds to the pick-up time, and may not have room for different or extra stands. I wonder how it'll fit with the different stands coming in the new edition/printing.

My biggest complaint about MR is the box for the hex tokens is stored sideways. Since there's a lid, and it fits flush, in theory there shouldn't be any shifting, but in practice the terrain tokens in there keep moving around, which adds a few extra seconds putting everything back where it should be each session. Or if you accidenally pull out the card storage box first, then they all spill out. It's the kind of mistake you think you'd only make once, but I keep seeming to forget.

I’m definitely getting one of these as I value the savings of time vs the cost of the organizer. Price-wise, they’re all in the same ballpark AFAIC so it’s really about which one I think is the best. In that regard, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the choices as I’ve never played the game and have no insight as to which part of these I might value over the others.

But as I’m laid up at home post-surgery with naught much else to do, I thought I’d try a little project and share it here.

My Thoughts
These are my thoughts after this exercise. Hopefully, this helps you and you make your own conclusions as YMMV.

General Note: Daedalus doesn’t have as many pictures of individual components so they may not look as good in the comparison I chose to do, but I don’t think that means the insert is any lesser for it (just that they don’t have as many pictures on their website). That said, I can’t say I’m getting a warm and fuzzy feeling between the lack of pictures and user wzdan’s comment above.

Cards = GT seems to have them all in one big card organizer whereas BT went for individual card holders by type. I think I prefer the BT model. The D pictures don't give me a clear idea of how they're organized.

Tokens = The token organizers all look pretty similar to me with no salient advantages by any.

Overlay Tiles = GT wins here for the lids that have component names on them as a handy legend.

Personal Player Elements = BT is the only one that I can see that has a special way of storing player character components. I like this a lot!

Player Character Tuckboxes = GT and D both have a special insert for these whereas BT has them float free in the box. I prefer an insert as floating free means things move around, fall over, etc.

Player Character Miniatures = Now it’s D’s turn to have them float free with GT and BT having an insert to hold them.

Plastic Stands = GT has a generic tray that holds monster sleeves and other assorted items. The more I look at it, the more I think those will move around and get mixed up.

Monster Ability Standees & Cards = BT wins here for the custom tuckboxes that holds the standees AND the cards in one place, but I think they all did a nice job. GT again has the names on the lid for a handy legend, and D has them vertical. With GT and D you have to find the cards in a separate place.

Map Tiles = They all pretty much float free in the box (which is to be expected), but I guess BT again has a nice innovation with a “map” to show you how to put them away.

Extra Features = The D inserts have a nicer, darker wood and have symbols on the side for easy reference. Very nice indeed!

I don't know for certain, but I guess I'd say after writing this up that I'm leaning towards the BT one. I like the individual player component boards quite a bit for ease of startup.

Wow, nice job on that. I'd like to mention that I saw two of these at origins, the GT and BT by your codes. I'm a new backer so I couldn't judge much as to a feel how they would be to use. But I found the font for the GT to not be friendly to my eyes, let us say. Being a burnt outline font I found it hard to read quickly, which borderlines on defeating the point. So to anyone looking at the picture and thinking 'that is hard for me to read', be aware it may not be better in person. Filling in with black might help, but some of it is fairly narrow.

I don't mean to be overly critical; obviously they did a lid and decided labels would be a nice bonus. I'm just pointing out to anyone that thinks they are hard to read in the pictures that they may find them so in real life as well.

Go ahead and make that purchase. Your self obviously knows the strengths (and weaknesses) of your will. Besides, this way your self can show yourself that you are the bigger person by forgiving yourself for breaking your self's promise. Yourself will become so grateful to your self that your selves will achieve an emotional bliss on a level that most selves never see.

Plus you will have a really awesome organizer for your really awesome game.

Still missing a solution that has individual flat boxes/trays for active characters that don't get too squeezed like the original tuckboxes.

Currently we collect each player's individual items in roomy zip-lock bags: this includes sleeved cards, sleeved attack mod deck in tuck box, character specific tokens, standees and bases, a pencil, life/exp counter and note-sheets.

A dream would be a wooden tray with cover/transparent lid for each active player/character (typ 4) so you have everything in one place ^^
... and of course they should integrate with the rest of the storage solution.

Also I find that overlay tiles dont need to be exactly separated ... we have a box for doors and chests, a box of traps and pressure plates, a box of decoratice overlays/hazardous terrain and a box with 2-3 hex tiles. So far it works pretty well.

Shopping items are best kept in pocket pages as soon as they are unlocked. So a flat tray that holds pocket pages and manuals would be great.
Same goes for the floor tiles ... a flat tray the size of the box is nice. ... Only version I see this implemented in is Broken Token.
Throw-in for these parts is a no go for me as they easily get bent and are a nuisance to remove to get to other bits before playing ^^

We also keep monster standees together with their respective stat chart and AI deck in labled tuck boxes. Very convenient!

Hope that gives producers of game inserts some ideas ...

Also since the Gloomhaven Box lid is rather tall ... it does not really matter if the combined trays are a little higher than the bottom of the box.

(PS: sofar we have 22 scenarios under our belt and try to optimize for least set-up time ^^)

Not sure what you're referring to about active character storage that isn't done by the broken token other then the transparent lid. That one has some pretty nice active character storage.

For pocket pages do you mean something like what is used for baseball cards? Seems like all of the inserts have nice caddies that allow for easy separation of unlocked cards for all of the decks.

Finally, your monster solution is exactly what broken token does as well.

Maybe you could elaborate a bit more on what is "missing" from the various inserts that you want since it seems like they're by and large all ready covered?

Also, 1:54 of the video.

So I have 2 questions regarding the Broken Token organizer (from what we see on the pictures and the video):

1. regarding the character tuckboxes: in the picture above we see that they are placed in the bottom of the box next to the miniatures box and the "active player" trays. But I only count 13 tuckboxes, can we assume that since you have 4 active player trays you will have 4 empty tuckboxes stored outside of the game?

2. regarding the monster standees: the idea of the custom tuckboxes sounds simple and awesome, and most monster standees are pretty regular, but what about the bosses? do they fit in those tiny tuckboxes? last I checked there was at least one very big standee, but I don´t see it stored anywhere else.

in general I had been waiting for tbt insert for a long time and to me it seems it will be the one which allows for better setup and cleanup time, but maybe I should wait for the one from go7gaming to see what other solutions might work better.

You are right ... I almost overlooked that Broken Token has player trays and they come close. I still like a closable box, because we occasionally take our characters home when leveling ^^

For unlocked item cards we use the same pocket pages as for Imperial assault. We have 16 cards back and front in each. Makes it is easy to see what is available. Better than chaotically spreading out a pack of cards on the table ^^ The pages fit where the rule book fits ...

jsesta84 wrote:

Yes, the tuckboxes for tokens and cards are very nice. However, I like our current solution that has everything concerning a monster type in a single tuck-box including the sleeved stat card (printed extra sleeves). Unfortunately the selfbuild paperstuff is a bit flimsy in the long run, so I am looking for a more permanent solution for the 2nd Printing, which might be Broken Token ^^
