Has anyone managed to win this?

We have played a few times now and we were pretty close at one point, maybe a turn or two away, but subsequent turns the game has destroyed us.

We have managed to win other versions of Pandemic and won the expert/extreme set up, but this one keeps teasing us with a near win condition, only to beat us pretty badly.

Any success stories?

We play 3 player BTW

We've played it about 20 times with 2-, 3-, and 4-players, and won about 8 times.

One of the most common mistakes made when learning the game is neglecting to monitor how many cultists remain in the supply; it's very easy to lose a game that you think you are on top of because the supply no longer has the requisite number of cultists to put in the board.

For example . . .

Let's say that during the Summoning phase in which you're drawing 3 Summoning cards, a 4th cultist shows up in Innsmouth/Factory. This triggers an Awakening. Turn over the next Old One card and it's, Shub-Niggurath: Draw 4 cards from the bottom of the deck and add one cultist to each of these locations.

You draw the cards and one of the locations is Dunwich/Church, where the additional cultist is the 4th, triggering another Awakening. Turn over the next Old One card, and it's Azathoth: Remove 3 cultists frim the unused supply.

This means that if you hadn't begun the Summoning phase with at least 10 cultists in the supply, you lose.

Managing the cultist supply is essential.

It's a tough game, but if you really focus on killing off the Shoggoths and preemptively defusing potential Rituals of awakening by cultists, it's beatable on hard mode about 60-75% of the time at two players.

Actually, after getting used to it, we decided to remove a third clue from each city, to have a go at an extra-relentless mode. It works pretty well, almost every game feels really thrilling.

Just curious - how many cards in the Summoning deck have Soggoth icons ?

My copy is not readily available and I don't remember any of us making the count.
Didn't want to over analize before getting into it.

Seems like it was maybe 4 - 1 per town ?
Swamp and Woods come to mind.

There are 8 of them:
Arkham (green) - Secret Lodge & University
Innsmouth (purple) - Pawn Shop & Docks
Kingsport (red) - Woods & Great Hall
Dunwich (yellow) - Historic Inn & Swamp

Ah yes - that makes more sense.

I do remember having to pay close attention
to the chance of Shoggoth movement
especially when close to a gate.

The guys at BoardGameGeekTV played and won expert on their first go (as can be seen on YouTube). It was sort of annoying for us who took considerable longer

But (as they said) they have played a lot of normal Pandemic, and they did get some very lucky draws.
