When I read variant #8 of the designer's variants doc (Queen's Architect Variants_02), I immediately thought that part of it might be used for a shorter game variant.

In variant #8, during setup, you only place 6 appreciation tokens on the track, instead of 10. Unless a player pays to place additional tokens, the game will end when someone jumps from that 6th token up to the palace.

"Race" games that end when a player hits a threshold often run long during the first play or two, due to the inefficient play of inexperienced players. A shorter first game might help players enjoy the game more. This is a very general statement, not specific to QA.

Would playing a shorter game mess up the balance or any of the game math?

[Disclaimer: I haven't played QA yet.]
