I THINK this was from the 1980s (possibly 90s, but I doubt it). It was a chess-like game that actually used chess pieces, plus a modular board that had terrain features on it, including forests, lakes, and physical castles with stone walls. It played (I think) up to 4 people, and you could set up the game in any number of different configurations. Pieces kind of moved like they would in chess, but there were special rules governing how they interacted with the terrain. Knights could jump over walls, for example And their were enough tiles that the maps for the game could be pretty damned big.

I was going to suggest Feudal until you got to the maps being so large....
