Funny. Libertarians frustrate me. There's stuff I agree with them on.

Then there's the crazy.

Yeah, my tax accountant is a dyed in the wool Libertarian. Strange since his occupation depends on government. After the financial crisis, he was ranting that none of the bank or loan people had gone to jail.
"So, you want the government to fix the problem?"

The Libertarial legitimate roles of government include protection versus fraud and coercion. I think this would have fallen under that.

Interference with private enterprise? No Libertarian I know would endorse that government interference, not the mention the cost in taxes. They would endorse a private association.

He probably looks at his job as protecting people from extortion. A worthy goal IMO.

Maybe, but an awful lot of what went wrong with the housing crisis was predatory behavior rather than fraud or coercion. One of the weaknesses, IMO, of Libertarianism is that it has a hard time in the gray areas, where (for example) no one is using force or fraud but at the same time people with better information or education are taking advantage of people who are making choices they don't fully understand or can't evaluate well.

Hard-selling home ownership with a balloon-payment mortgage where all the numbers are right there in the document seems like the sort of thing most libertarians would say might be shitty but should not be illegal or subject to sanctions.

Libertarianism is intelligence without wisdom. It all sounds good on paper, less regulation, more freedom, more choice...blah blah blah. But their ideas in practice offer little to no protection for those most vulnerable in society.
