Introduction: For the last few years, I have whipped out some boardgame convention haiku for my annual trips to the WBC and Prezcon conventions. I take what could only be described as extreme poetic license. For your consideration, here is the product of this year's WBC:

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 1:

Leaving home to travel
Morning humid and dark
Heart light and flying.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 2:

Road unreels quickly
Road and stomach lie empty
Must stop for Sheetz food.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 3:

Anticipation
What lies ahead is unknown
Behind, losses fade.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 4:

Second-place winner
Perhaps the first-place loser
Answer for yourself.

2017 World Boardgaming Championship Haiku # 5:

Sitting silently
Staring at the board for hours
A social past-time?

2017 World Boardgaming Championship Haiku #6:

That is not the way
(Reading the rules would confirm)
To play that game, oaf.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 7:

July ski resort
Not really a ski resort
How about boardgames?

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 8:

Are we really here
To just play games for a week?
The dice cry out: "Yes!"

2017 World Boardgaming Championship Haiku # 9:

Was I really here
If the tee-shirt was unbought?
One's laundry is proof.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 10:

Make-believe worlds
Ruled by chance and strategy
No consequences.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 11:

Those who design games
Unknown for most of the time
Rock stars for today.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 12:

Love to eat and drink
But if greasy fingers stain
You will replace it.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 13:

Bad luck lies to me
Tells me I can win next time
The odds are the same.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 14:

Playing games all day
Today became tomorrow
What dang time is it?

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 15:

Second place is mine
First placed escaped me somehow
Was it skill or luck?

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 16:

On Saturday night
The zenith of the game con
They're getting loopy.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 17:

Convention foodstuffs
Overpriced and overmuch
Try the buffet? No.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 18:

Was I just nodding?
It's only one-forty-two
I'm not sleepy I'm

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 19:

Last morning comes bright
Wake up, says the harsh sunlight
Leave before check-out.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 20:

Want some breakfast now
Maybe stop for lunch later
Arrive home stuffed full?

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 21:

Goodbye my good friends
My twice a year gaming pals
It won't be so long.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 22:

It's not about games
It was never about games
It's about people.
2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 23:[/b]

We're stopping outbound
One last trip to the vendors
One hundred handshakes.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 24:

Don't look back today
You know it might make you cry
Something in my eye.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 25:

Games behind me
Wife in front of me tonight
Hours to think and drive.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 26:

Unpacking my stuff
End of the journey is here
Back in the real world.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 27:

Hey, was it worth it?
Costly in time, cash, effort
I'd do it again.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 28:

Love going away
Being in another world
Only for a time.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 29:

At home with my wife
Have to take out the trash now
Nice to be back, though.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 30:

No trophies this year?
No, didn't win a trophy
Won some games, lost some.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 31:

Went to the game con
So you're done for a while, right?
Another in six months.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 32:

It was luxury
I should not have taken it
But friends insisted.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 33:

People are no good
Except when they're really good
Thank you, my good friends.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 34:

Generosity
Of heart, mind and money
You made it happen.

2017 World Boardgaming Championships Haiku # 35:

What was the best thing?
What game was your favorite?
Hanging out with folks.

Haiku Denouement

Me: Did you read my Game Convention Haiku?

Wife: Yes. They weren't very good. They felt like a third grader wrote them.

Me: Yeah.

Wife: I couldn't figure out whether you were trying to sound like that.

Me: Sort of. I respect the haiku, but it is about the most unsuited art form for dash-them-off convention updates. It was intended to be a bit tacky in a well-meant sense. Perhaps a bit droll and ironic.

Wife: I see. Well, I liked one of them.
