There is no real difference in component quality. The 3rd edition has larger cubes and, if I recall, has a tweak to the number of bonus markers. The rulebooks vary slightly between editions, but that has to do with rule clarifications and especially the translation, and I don't think any one is considered perfect.

In my view it doesn't really matter. It's not like some games where different editions have substantial changes in components, new rules, updated artwork, etc. That's not really the case with HT. So you'll get varying opinions and mine is it doesn't matter much.

tl;dr: Doesn't really matter.

The original Argentum edition had some quirks in the English translation of the rulebook, but it was entirely accurate.

The Z-Man edition cleaned up the graphic design a bit, unmuddying the map and putting a distinctive back on the three starting bonus dinner-plates. It cleaned up the language in the rulebook, but in the process it introduced some rules errors. It also slightly changed the bonus marker mix.

I haven't seen a newer edition but apparently the cubes are a little larger and don't fit as nicely onto the board.

I have the newest edition. The cubes fit their spots on the board just fine. The board has more saturated colors so contrast is a little better. Unfortunately, the rulebook still reads like it was translated by someone who got a gentleman's B in English classes back in Germany. There are good alternatives in the Files section here.

Great game.

i'll indeed invest the most readily and affordable version.

do all of the editions play 2 players, or do i need an expansion for that?

There was a terrible two-player variant included in the first edition, and I think it was in the Z-Man as well.

The Hansa Teutonica: Britannia expansion includes rules for a better two-player variant. I think these were incorporated into the most recent edition of the base game as well.

Note that "better" doesn't mean "good."

Agreed. HT is one of my favorite games, but it's no good with 2.
