I feel your pain - I bought this one NIS on a BGG Auction a couple of months ago and still haven't gotten it to the table

I didn't pay $90 for it thoughwhistle

Too bad you are all the way in California - otherwise we'd be able to break in my copy.

Any way to do this via VASSAL? Is there a module out there?

I'm in the same boat...I'd be up for that...

Games Workshop may re-release it. I'm sure they are aware of its popularity.

Don't lose hope yet!

There's a Tabletop Simulator module. Obviously, it's unofficial.

I picked up a copy after hearing the Founders rave about it one too many times. I've yet to get through a full game, however. The first session with my regular group was going ok, but the game just ran way too long and we had to cancel it. Not sure after that if they'll be willing to try again...

Edit: You can try subscribing to GeekLists featuring the game in order to be alerted to auctions. They seem to be getting snatched up for the BIN price, but the last one went for $75 and was pre-painted. Still a lot, but less than $90 and a bit less than the Geek Market prices.

Games Workshop has the license for theme and setting. Game itself is not theirs.

Yes it is. The first edition was published by GW.

However it is true that a lot of changes were made by FFG in the 2nd and 3rd editions, so although GW can publish a 4th edition it would probably be fairly different.

I do not think the OP or the other commentators where lamenting that they could not play the first edition. They are talking about the 3rd Edition, which GW does not have rights to reprint.

They might have the rights. They are reprinting Talisman already.
It just depends on what kind of deal was made between FFG and GW for the content FFG developed.

According to Tom Vasel's law: If the game is good it will eventually be reprinted.

I think due to the popularity of this game, Games workshop will re-print it. They might have to re-do art or something because perhaps Fantasy Flight owns the art...or something weird like that. I don't know who owns what. I know you can't copy right game mechanisms but I'm sure there was a n arrangement that was made when the two companies parted ways.

Speaking of wanting a re-print.......Forbidden Stars. I would love an expansion with the Tyranids and the Necron. There are some home brew ones (that look really good actually), but I would like an official one.

I know, that's why I said "although GW can publish a 4th edition it would probably be fairly different".

But I don't know how different. Since you can't copyright game mechanisms, perhaps GW could borrow heavily from the mechanisms of 3rd ed. They would need different art though.

The point is, I was replying to a poster saying the "game is not theirs" - which is not true. If GW republish it, it will certainly be a new edition rather than a reprint of 3rd, but it might be pretty similar to 3rd.

They wouldn't need different art if that was part of the negotiation of the FFG/GW separation.

GW got at least some of the Talisman illustrations from FFG (because they are using one of them on their website to promote the new release), so it's possible the same could apply here. Nobody knows for sure who got what in the split except for those involved, so to state that GW can't use the FFG artwork remains to be seen.

The theme and setting are based on the novel, which predates modern copyright law and is in the public domain. All art and text are under copyright, and the title is probably trademarked.

Game mechanics are not generally protected under US law. Things might be different in the European Common Market and elsewhere.

And whatever agreement FFG and GW had might have included non compete clauses extending beyond the print run of 3E, perhaps in perpetuity. Both companies could be legally restrained from publishing it alone. We have no way of knowing.

Games workshop are releasing an identical version of Talisman this winter. Though if memory serves me correctly it was Games workshop that released the the 4th edition initially before handing it off to Fantasy Flight, hence FF's being revised 4th edition.

Anyway I really hope it gets another release.

I paid about $130 for a mint 2nd edition. Less than a year later FFG announced 3rd edition... I never picked up third ed, but still see them in FLGS's and bookstores once in a while.

I will never go all out on another game, dare I say no game is really worth it (to me) to hunt it down and spend 3x its original selling value.

This is a great game and I anticipate it will get reprinted.
